Views on Pulling Manes and Tails..

i found a load of old horsie magazines the other day, and have been reading them, and some-one had written in reply to an article about showing, saying how they hated pulling manes and tails, and thought it was barbaric.

i have to admit, i agreed until recently, but then i thought i'd try it with Oz, because the top of his tail looks like a loo brush, just tidied it up a bit, he didn't bat an eyelid! didn't even lift his head up from his haylage! and Oscar is the most over-dramatic horse ever, so i doubt he could feel it at all.

so, what are your views?
 
i chose "Other", because it really does depend on the horse, and i go by their reactions. i've had horses that didn't seem to notice it at all, so i'll happily pull theirs, and others that were obviously really in pain, including a tb gelding who used to try to squash me against the wall the moment he felt me get hold of a few mane hairs... just not worth the risk with that type, i'm afraid. i think it makes that type very resentful, and that's the last thing i want my horses to feel!
 
my girl is all natural, she has big wild hair and i think she look beautiful, i dont have a problem with people doing it as long as the horse doesnt mind and person pulling is not too rough or anything
 
Mine lifts his tail for it to be pulled!! Have met very few horses that truly dislike it, more that they dislike the sensation as opposed to them being in pain when it is pulled. I think if someone is sensitive enough, 95% of horses can have pulled manes no probs, and prob about 85% tails. Clove oil is fantastic on the roots of "sensitive" horses.
 
mine loves having his mane done! he practically falls asleep and his bottom lip starts to quiver! never tried his tail, but i think he'd be the same. he's such a cuddly thing - just loves a pampering

My lad is a Hann x TB & he looks good with a pulled mane & doesn't mind it at all. We razor his tail a little, again he doesn't mind. I have however seen a tail that was pulled so roughly that the dock was rted raw on each side....not nice

I wish everyone would remember to only pull when the horse is warm after being exercised though, the hair comes out so much easier.
 
My horse hates having his mane pulled. So I use a weird method - thinning scissors then artistic trimming! I guess each horse is different, so I ticked other.
 
I was able to pull Fly's mane, but as he was Welsh, kept a natural tail (only neatened before anyone says anything!). Ralph however, wont let be near his mane for love nor money with a comb, so, I found the solo comb for the mane and clippers for the tail! Never been keen on pulling the tail

i use a rake thingy for our tails,quick and painless.
it would take me too long to go through my cobs tail it is/was so thick.i am always looking for laboursaving ideas.it just takes a couple of seconds now.
before i pulled her tail i had to sew extra velcro on the tail guard cos her tail was was so fat!!!
i also do underneath the shetlands mane with the rake.
 
I am all for a nicely pulled mane and tail. Amy never batted an eye lid about having her main pulled (didn't do her tail), and Thumper is the same - both mane and tail.

However, Freddy was a sensative soul, and found it very upsetting - so his tail was not pulled, and I did his main with scissors. I could't bear to upset the special boy.
 
I pull one of my horses mane/tail, but the other one hates it, so I use a solocomb on her. I think it depends on the horse - it would be cruel of me to try and pull my mares mane, as she really does panic if you try, but my other horse isn't bothered at all. I chose other

I don't think there's anything wrong with it tho I hate seeing it done by people who don;t know what they're doing and rip huge chunks out. Personally I don't like pulled tails - I like to have something to plait with.
