Views on these spurs please (comb spurs)

Since being clipped my horse is objecting to spurs. I usually use blunt end 1/2 inch spurs and have been using these for 18 months with no problems.

Since his first clip this year he has been getting really bad rubs from them and is very sensitive. Everything seems to be rubbing him, even his bossy bib rubs his back

I have been riding him without but I really need them for more intense schooling to get him to repsond quicker to the leg. He is going to the Prestige Champs at the end of the month so I need to sort something out before then.

I was planning on getting some impulse spurs (the ones with the roller ball on the end), but I have been told they have quite a long shank. Then I came across these.

Anyone got any views on them?
 
Over here we call these spurs "Motivaters" and the people I know who have them, only have them for their children for cutting cattle on horses who are too big for them. My daughter has a pair of these and she uses them when she rides my cutting horse with the cattle....but only then, never for regular riding. It allows her to have him instantly obey her commands without any confusion due to her being much smaller and lighter on him than I am.

They aren't spurs that I'd use on a daily basis to be honest - I have rowled ones which again are only used for very short periods of time (and hardly ever, only if my horse is in a lazy mood) when I'm cutting cattle.

I think you would be better to look at buying rowled ones rather than these Motivaters.
 
I did think as much as they are not like normal spurs that you only use when you need them. I am just looking for something that wont irritate him while his coat is so short. I will try the shorter rounded type and see what he thinks of those

On the John Whittaker website they have what they call "dummy spurs" and they still have a ball end but on a really short shank. Have a look and see.
 
I can't get to my copies of H&H at the mo as I'm at work but there was a Q&A on some soft ended spurs in an issue about 2 or 3 weeks ago - wish I could remember more about the article, I'll try and dig it out when I get home - but I remember they said they're good for sensitive horses!
 
The Q&A bit was on impuls spurs.
Although they are longer than you may choose they are not sharp and have a 'softer' effect on the horse. My chestnut marks very easily with spurs and can be sharp but I've not had a problem with the Impuls spurs.
I'd def recommend you try them and not the comb spurs!
