I have a vintage saddle that is surplus to requirement and was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not there is a market for vintage saddles in the UK at the moment.

The saddle is a Barnsby 'Pony Club Approved' saddle with no under panel (old fashioned style) and a linen under panel (the bit where the tree is). Any help appreciated. This saddle is probably about 40 years old :)

Basically, No. Unless its a showing saddle people generally don't buy anything without knee rolls and the padding on the outside of the saddle flap. If you put it on ebay you'd get about a fiver if you're lucky! If you come across someone you know who can try it on their pony and its a good fit, then as long as its in good condition you could probably get more for it.

You've taken me back! In my pony owning life I had four of these at various times, the first one in 1964. They were pretty uncomfortable. Frightening they are considered vintage, makes me feel so old. They were good for barrel shaped ponies though - they never slipped. Sorry though, no idea about a market for them. Might be a good conversation piece for an instructor doing unmounted PC rallies (along the lnes of, 'look what terrible saddles children had to ride on in days of old'!)

I'm a great fan of the older saddles. Half-panel flatties seem to be quite forgiving to fit, reluctant to slip, and surprisingly comfortable once you're used to them. I think they offer a bit more shoulder-room for the pony too.
My herd are a bit of a rag-tag bunch, so if you're wondering who buys the £5 ebay saddles, that'd be me :o)

However, even I'd usually stay clear of the linen-backed ones, as they need more care than I have time for.

I wish I had the space and money to buy it from you - I love old saddles and would dearly love to collect them, but sadly I have no room and even less spare cash . . . I have the same problem with bits, I saw a collection at a country fair once and the number of different types is absolutely astounding! This person had been collecting for years and years, so there were some really weird old ones as well as the modern.

You may find a market in the USA via ebay, I have seen older saddles fetch money on there as they like the older genuine English saddlery.
I tend to have the older style in my workshop lurking around, I am not really a fan of modern Saddlery as I am trained to make the old stuff!
