hi guys i rode a friends horse yesterday (have know horse for 3 years) and this was about the 4 th time ive rode it. had been out for about an hour and half and we decided to have one last canter he was going lovely then all of a sudden put his head down n just went for it there was absolutely no stopping him i had my hands near enough on his bit trying to stop/turn him but he was having none of it.

we were heading straight towards some trees so i thought he might stop but as we neared the trees he turned throwing me to the side and i smacked my back on a tree then hit my head on a tree stump (didnt know this until my friend finally caught up and told me) i was so winded thought i was going to die couldnt move my neck. horse had gone so my friend headed off afer him but no where to be seen.

after id sat on floor and managed to compose myself a little bit we rang the lady who lives in the house right next to our field and asked her to try and catch him also rang my friend who came straight down in her car to pick me up.

the lady from house next to field caught the horse and managed to walk him back to field my friend took me back to field rugged him up and turned him out for me as i just couldnt move and was in absolute agony.

i was going to drive my car home then get my OH to take me to hospital but my friend was having none of it and made her husband drive me to a n e in my car as soon as i got to hospital they put me straight onto a flat bed and gave me morphine (or as my friends husband text her told her id had methadone  but suddenly realised what he said n corrected it but did give me a giggle lol)

any way after chest xrays and being prodded and poked nothing broken thank god!! so was sent home with tramadol and diazepam and told to rest for a good few days. so now im laid up in bed in absolute agony and my absolutely wonderful friend is going to feed my horse and also the horse im looking after (the one that bolted).

sorry its been long just wanted to share as it was the most terryfying moment of my life as never been bolted with before im just hoping it hasnt knocked my confidence when i get back on board it wont have with my boy as hes never ever bolted and hes a complete dope on a rope so fingers crossed for quick recovery.

if you would like to share you experiences of bolting please do :)

ouch :( Glad you're okay.

I've been bolted with once and it's absolutely terrifying, isn't it?
I was hacking with a group about ten years ago and my horse spooked and took off. He headed for home (thankfully) but I still ended up galloping down a main road with no stirrups and a handful of mane. I came off in the carpark when I finally lost my balance and ended up falling onto a parked car.

I think my poor mum was more freaked out than I was. I was very lucky - I walked away with bruising to my hip and two tiny scrapes (elbow and chin).
It wasn't the horse's fault. I ended up loaning him for 18 months until he was sold.

Good luck for when you get back on. :)
I've been lucky and my confidence hasn't been affected by any of my bad falls.

Oh no, poor you, hope you feel better soon. Bolting is one of my worst fears. It only happened to me once many, many years ago when I was about 15. I was riding my friend's cob for her as she was on holiday. The main road going out of Weston where I lived had very wide grass verges and we often used to canter along there. Anyway this day I was cantering him along when he suddenly tanked off with me. It was terrifying, especially as we were approaching a side road that was coming out onto the A38. I stopped just in the nick of time, but have never forgotten it. It's the most horrible feeling. Take care x

Wow you were so lucky not to have done any major damage. Do hope you are on the mend soon. A small but in that amount of pain I personally think you should have called 999 as you could have done major damage to your spine in the fall and hitting tree and stump. They would have boarded you and emoblised you. I know when I was bolted with some years ago and came off and concussed YO would not let me move at all and had the ambulance called before I could say or do anything. I was on the x country course at the time and they had to carry me across the dyke on a stretcher! It was hard work for them as the footbridge was only one person wide. I said if god forbid it was to happen again put the strecher in the bucket of the telipotter!! after all I was not going ot know anything about it.

Good luck mend quickly.

Poor you - really scary stuff. I have been bolted with years ago - I was hacking with a friend having a nice controlled fast canter across a huge common, when both horses simply took off blindly. There was no stopping or steering and I saw my life flash before me. Luckily our horses did stop and the cause was another rider cantering up to one side behind us.

Like you say you cannot control a bolt; you likely did the best thing as bailing out is pretty dangerous too. A local rider was killed a few years ago when she chased after her sister's horse which had bolted and thrown the sister and this action caused her horse to bolt blindly straight onto the busy A12.

Try not to dwell on it - it was one of those extraordinary events. I hope you are not too sore for too long. Sending healing vibes :)

Ooh sounds painful! Glad it wasn't too serious and enjoy the cocktails and the weird dreams! Just be wary of when you stop the diazepam as it can do funny things with your moods. I was awful.

Get well soon! x

thank you all for your replies :) feeling better today than yesterday i couldnt even get out of bed last night without crying in pain this morning tho im just about to get out with the odd swear word or damn that hurts! lol my OH has had to go to work so we have kept my nearly 11 year old son at home with me today and i must say hes doing a fab job of looking after his mum.

bolting has always been my biggest fear with horses and i only said to my friend who i was out with about ten mins before hand that i was just going to have a very slow steady canter guess the horse had other ideas lol xx

Sounds painful and Scary:eek: I also ride a friend's horse and he'd recently done the same thing with his rider. She was also having one last canter before heading back when he went into bronking tank off mode and smeared her along a fence.
I was riding him last Monday and it was really windy so he was a bit uptight but had dealt with it quite well. About half a mile from home I put my hand on his rump and he must have thought that he was about to be mauled by a monster because he jumped straight into gallop. We were on a bit of pavement where there is a grassy verge with some trees between the path and the road and there was an unsuspecting man walking away from us. I remember thinking don't run over that man and oh crap that tree is not in a good place and also the road was quite busy. I managed to get him to stop by staying calm and talking to him quietly..def a don't panic Mr Manwaring moment
Poor man looked very startled especially as there were two more horses right behind me wondering if it was worth panicking too. Very proud of him. His owner who was with us on another horse was almost in tears because he'd not thrown in any bucks and because he'd stopped for me. Very touching to be told 'my horse loves you and i love you so please don't leave us'.
Hope your confidence is still intact and that you make a speedy recovery. AND go back to the doctor if the pain does not ease off in a day or two. Xx :)

Had same thing happen with my hubby's horse when I first met him-it went mental tanked off and then threw the biggest buck. I flew about 15 foot and landed on my head in boggy mud! I thought I was going to die, I just couldn't breathe but went to hospital and much the same as you. Only difference is that I broke my back 3 years previously so they were extra careful with x-rays.
All I would say is don't rush yourself. I tried and set myself back again :( I still have chiropractor every month and still only walk and trot-I'm a wus I know but new horse isn't keen on cantering and don't fancy my chances if it went wrong. I have a new instructor for this year so will try canter before summer is out :)
Good luck and hope you heal quickly xxx

Happened to me last year when my 3yo bolted with me. I fell off onto the small of my back and he kicked me in the back of my head as he went past me. Knocking my hat clean off my head! I dont remember doing it but OH says i got up, marched horse around the arena in the place he spooked at to show him it was ok, before putting him to bed.
After that i started throwing up and OH's mum drove me to a&e.. where they pulled me out of the car on a spinal board, dosed me up on morphine and xrayed me all over!
It'll be a year in april since it happend, i've not yet ridden since =/

Sounds like you had a narrow escape, glad nothing is broken.

My so called bombproof 1st pony (at least thats what she was sold as) as a kid used to bomb off all the time, used to get home before me on several occasions  We did hedges, ditches, brick wall, a twitten (stone at one end and kissing gate at the other) river, as well as numerous open fields. Broke a few things but looking back don't think I would have changed her she taught me how to hang on and sit a buck and rear :D

Getting back on was always a bit of a challenge more me pee'd off that she had done it again than fear. Hope your next ride has a better outcome ;)

My old pony used to do it a lot with me when I first had him and it was terrifying. Must admit I am always wary in open spaces now.

Son sounds a star :)

It's horrible but you sound like you've not let it instantly knock you and are making light of it which is good. Definitely keep in mind that it wasn't yours too. Hope you feel a little less sore soon and good luck when you get back on x

Ll, I've just realized who you are! I have you on fb! If you need any help, let me know! Hope you are feeling better this morning.... -hugs-

i usually only walk and trot my old boy as he can be a bit of a ****** n turn into a bucking bronco but in walk and trot hes an absolute gem but this horse i rode ive known for few years and knew his old owner before my y/o bought him and he had never once done anything like this wether it was the wind or not i dont know my friend has text me and said she rode down there today to see if there was anything that could have scared him but couldnt see anything. think ill be sticking to walk and trot from now on lol

thank you to everyone who has replied feeling chirpier already but not liking the dozy way the tablets are making me feel lol xx

One of mine is being a loony this week...it's a lot to do with the wind I think. I was bolted with about 20 years ago and I've never forgotten the feeling of panic when you try to stop and NOTHING HAPPENS. I did manage to stay on, but only because the lunatic showjumper that took off with me headed across a field next to a freshly ploughed field, and I managed to steer him into the plough - that slowed the beggar down.

Glad you are OK though:eek:

i came off my horse 2 weeks ago and he stood on my leg -its a rainbow of colours in a horse shoe shape ouch! anyway today was the first time riding him and i have to say he was very fresh but very good but my nerves were very bad!! ive treated myself to a 5 point breastplate to hang onto to give me confidence and it helped loads !
can you just have a plod on something quiet for the first couple of goes just to give your confidence a boost?

hes been a little star bless him although he has been calling me names like hunchback and little old lady (walking like a hunchback but still hes a cheeky monkey!) but he has been running round getting me a drink letting dogs out and hes now sat in bed playing the xbox bless him x
