Visiting the Lake district this summer! need tips!

Hello.
We are an Norwegian family visiting the Lake District this summer.
Me and my two daughters would like to go riding for a day, my housbond does not know how, so he will need something else to do ( diving,hiking, climbing or something).
We plan to have 3 days there, maybe 4 and would really appriciate some tips and links to good B&B`s close to good stables where the horses are treated well.
We will not have a car, but travel Britain by train and buss so the facilities should not be to far apart.

Anyone who can help me?

I have been looking at the "golake" site but would like some first-hand knowledge if possible :)

I have been several times as me and a group of friends go up to a big old house in the lakes every year for an extra long weekend during the summer.

I was really impressed by the welfare of the horses and the friendly knowledgeable staff. Most of my group 12-in total, were total city living novices, but the staff were really great made sure everyone had individual treatment, proper hat fitting and ridden assessment before going out. There were plenty of ride leaders and assistants so that the 2 of us who could ride were able to have a proper gallop along the beach and my totally scared friend was able to be assured that she would pretty much have a leader next to her the whole time! We have done the 3 hour beach rides, and even the one year when the weather was awful everyone still had a great time, the scenery along the beach is wild and beautiful and makes for pretty spectacular gallops! They also do fell rides, half days up into the hills and full day rides over more difficult terrain for the more experienced rider, (which look amazing!-i have always wanted to have a go on- but am too much of a coward to go on my own!)

We were staying in a house a few miles away, but I know that the centre run riding holidays and i think they have links with local b&bs on their website. It would probably be best to call them and they would be able to help recommend you a place, from my experiences with them the staff were really helpful (even when i was just making my preliminary enquiries into whether they could cater for such a big group of beginners).

I also know that there is a train station really close, as one of our group had to get the train up from Preston having crashed his car the night before. The station is Silecroft Railway station and it is about a 3minute walk from there to the trekking centre!

Hopefully we can help as I feel I owe it to the Norwegians for being so welcoming when I go over, and being endlessly patient when I try to practice my Norwegian!

We are going most likely the last two weeks of July....
We are starting in Dorset, dooing Monkey World and the Roman baths i think. Then working our way up to the lakes, and then having the big finally shopping in London before we go home.. All in two weeks ;)
 
I can't comment a lot on the riding establishments but what I will say is the lake district is probably my most favourite place in the whole world, I don't think a year has past since childhood when I haven't spent a week up there (off again in June). The scenery, the walks, the wildlife, the pubs... we were offered a holiday anywhere we wanted for our honeymoon and spent two weeks hiking there and had a brilliant time! :-) Have a great time (but do expect rain!!!)

I live in the Lakes - it's called the Lakes for a reason - rain, rain and more rain.

I dont think we will have time for riding in Dorset this year, but i doubt it will be our last trip to England so i might ask for help another year :)

I also live in the Lake District, it does not rain all the time, sometimes it snows! Seriously you can't get this green and beautiful without a little rain.

I would also thoroughly recommend the heavy horse centre, they look after their horses extremely well and are very friendly, also have a cafe your husband could sit in or they will give you a guided tour, no charge, and show you the DVD of their trek down from Scotland. I personally much prefer them to Murthwaite Green.

If you want dressage and instruction then Bigland Hall EC is good. They do a 2 or 3 day trek to Coniston.

It is funny you are Norwegian, my lovely yard owner is half Norwegian, you don't seem to meet many people from Norway.

As for where to stay, there are hundreds of places, but I would book fairly soon as the accommodation does get booked very quickly.

Haha same... and guess what its doing right now? :rolleyes:

I saw a chocolate plaque in thorntons the other week in town which said ' I came on a day trip to the lake district... It didnt rain so i bought you this' :D I thought it was cool haha.

I've never been to the heavy horse place but i know a few people who have and they highly recommend it :)
 
I second Murthwaite Green. The owner is very experienced and runs a truely professional yard. I have a friend who had a not very good experience with Cumbrian Horses. :)

Not sure I agree about Murthwaite Green. Never heard a bad word about Cumbrian Heavy Horses, everyone I know who has ridden there has enjoyed it. Annie Rose is very knowledgeable and is very willing to help anyone.
