My horse is looking and acting well but has a tendency for chewing wood. He's particularly keen on barking trees but is sometimes partial to fences. He's on turnout with decent pasture 24/7 during summer. In winter he'll be in at night and has bucket feed with a broad spectrum supplement. The routine described is what he's been used to since he was born ( he's lived on the same farm). When he's in he never chews the wood in his stable. He's sometimes caught barking trees in winter, but this is less frequent.
I've always been lead to believe that such behaviour is related to a vitamin/mineral deficiency. In winter it's easy to give him supplements but in summer he doesn't have a bucket feed and it would be difficult to do so because of the circumstances by which he's managed ( shared grazing etc).
Are there any decent supplements that can be fed by hand ? I'm only familiar with the powders mixed in feeds.
