My horse is looking and acting well but has a tendency for chewing wood. He's particularly keen on barking trees but is sometimes partial to fences. He's on turnout with decent pasture 24/7 during summer. In winter he'll be in at night and has bucket feed with a broad spectrum supplement. The routine described is what he's been used to since he was born ( he's lived on the same farm). When he's in he never chews the wood in his stable. He's sometimes caught barking trees in winter, but this is less frequent.

I've always been lead to believe that such behaviour is related to a vitamin/mineral deficiency. In winter it's easy to give him supplements but in summer he doesn't have a bucket feed and it would be difficult to do so because of the circumstances by which he's managed ( shared grazing etc).

Are there any decent supplements that can be fed by hand ? I'm only familiar with the powders mixed in feeds.

Dodson and Horrell do a product called Equibites.
Basically they are 'biscuits' that come in a large tub and are about the size of 50p piece.

You feed approx. 5-12 biscuits by hand each day (depending on size of horse/pony) to provide all necessary vitamins and minerals needed.

Dodson and Horrell Equibites. The tubs are 3kg you can also get them in 10kg bags. It's 1 "biscuit" per 500kg horse weight.

You could try a pelleted balancer that's fed in tiny amounts so can be fed by hand, I've done this with my mini in the past as he doesn't need any hard feed. Equimins Advance Complete or Formula4Feet comes to mind but there are probably others too.

Equine America do around tub of pellets that are vits and mins plus a probiotic, can't remember what they call them now but they used to be called Top Form, and I used them once a couple of years ago.

The daily amount is literally a tiny scoop which would easily be fed from your hand!!

erm it's not one per 500kg it's one per 50kg of horse weight....not sure where that other 0 came from lol. My mare gets 9 a day.

Equimins do a pelleted supplement. It think it's called tip top. I give my gelding a scroll once a day with no chaff needed.
