What would be considered the absolute best vitamin/mineral supplement for a horse with severe EMS (but not overweight at all)?
She’s also an exceptionally fussy feeder.
Years ago I had an analysis done of my grass and haylage and then made up semi-custom mineral mix based on that. I use this wonderful site https://webassets.nationalacademies.org/nrh/ - just need to be a bit careful with the units if you're not used to them. The mix the horses get is Equimins calcium along with Progressive Earth pro-mineral, biotin and salt. I don't know if there are specific additional requirements for EMS but I would imagine those would come under vet care rather than nutrition? e.g. metformin? Only one of the horses has said yuk to the minerals but I just built them up slowly in his feed along with half a handful of oats and now he happily eats everthing.
for mine who lives on an off grass track I use equimins AC, salt, vit E 5000iu, micro linseed, pea powder for protein, magnesium.
he is a pain to get him to eat them but the only thing I found worked was molassed sugar beet. Half a pound soaked am and half a pound pm, split the minerals etc into 2 and he gobbles them down
Spillers Lite & Lean is the one I’ve found not only to be tasty but the one most often recommended by independent parties, nutritionists and The Laminitis Site (not to be confused with the laminitis trust).
My pony has EMS. Currently using Metaslim from Simple Systems for her balancer but she was previously on Spilllers Lite and Lean. Both very tasty and kept her looking great. X
