i am loathe to feed my foal tbh, he is on adlib hay and looking great - but I would like him to get a vit&min supplement and wondered if folks could recommend one? My older horse is on Baileys lowcal balancer, im assuming this wouldnt be suitable but i dont want to give him the yougstock equivalanet - he is a sec A and already doing rather well:rolleyes::D

I use Equivite (as your link on the other post), mixed with a handful of chaff once a day. I give him a scoop a day. Only use it because that is what the others are on and, like yours, my mare is a gannet who destroys field licks

so these general purpose supps liek Equavite are suitable for foals? thats whats confusing me as they dont mention youngstock in the blurb....

It isn't specifically formulated for youngstock, but it is a balanced broad spectrum supplement. I feed at adult level and I believe that together with ad lib hay, this is all a weanling needs. My very personal opinion, but has always worked for me.

Or you could get either a broad based vits and mins lick for him to use at will or feed Surelimb powder with a bit of chaff...would ensure he gets all he needs.

thanks , i cant use a lick as he had one and my other horse pigged out on it, and the results werent pretty- lets just say i have some tail-flap washing to do:rolleyes:

does sure grow contain a lot of protein?

if a broad spec vit& min like equavite is suitable... is there any reason baileys lowcal balancer wouldnt also be?

If he is doing well do you need to supplement his feed at all? If he isnt growing to fast I would leave him with adlib hay. They seem to manage in the wild! Normal broad spectrum vits and mins arnt really suitable for youngstock because growing horses need different levels of stuff eg Calcium as they are growing and the normal vits and mins dont provide this (I think I posted this on your last thread?). If you want to supplement him i know people who have used the NAF Youngstock and Global Herbs Youngstock and both worked well.

Naf do a youngstock supplement although I think their general purpose one is suitable for babies too... I fed suregrow to my young colt and he looked fab on it x didn't pile the pounds on him either as you feed very little of it x

I always use Suregrow for my Welsh youngsters and they do well on it, at least you can up and down their other rations whilst keeping the SG constant knowing they are getting the right vits for a growing baby
