New boy is just being fed on a scoop of alfa a for breakfast and dinner (I've been told not to feed him on anything more othrwise he'll go off his tree

). On the days he's worked he has a scoop of electro salts put in his tea, because he's a sweaty bugger when he works hard, and he has a big salt lick permanatly hung up in his stable. Now I hadn't given it any thought until tonight but would it be worth giving him a vit & min supplement or will he be getting everything he needs form the alfa a (blonde question I know but apart from the protein content I have no idea what the nutritional values are in a bag of alfa!)

Wont hurt to feed a broad spectrum vit supplement like equivite, especially as he is getting worked and not getting reccommended levels of hard feed, can you not feed bluechip or top spec etc???

Sorry to disagree, but a lot of grass, even good grass is deficient in vits such as vit E.

Either get your soil analysed or add a broad spectrum supplement anyway. I have been using the Global Herbs one, although am about to switch to the NAF as it comes in refil bags and works out a bit cheaper.

no thats fine I dont mind, my horses are on a broad spectrum supplement over the winter and they come off it in april and are on good (but not too much) grazing and they are is excellent condition with just that (they do have chaff and p mix but only cos I feel bad if they dont get breakfast!). When grass grows too quickly they also get magnesium.

If money is an issue Feedmark Benevit is really good value, particularly if you go to any of the major shows like Badminton/Hickstead etc as they always sell at 50% off.

I agree grass will not necessarily cover all the needs of a horse and a vit/min supplement should be fed.

he should get 90% of what he needs from the alfalfa and the grass at this time of year, but when the grass is poorer you should really give him a basic vits and mins supplement.

try naf gp, or D&h's equi-bites.

or try well-being from the link on my sig.
