Vocal horses

All of mine (6) will call if they hear me in the stable area and if I call one of my minis by name she will always answer wherever she is in the fields which is very handy if I am trying to bring them in as it tells me where they are, they have about 15 acres to roam around with lots of little wooded areas that they hide in so she always gives the game away.

The stable is right next to the house so I get a "get up and bring breakfast" neigh in the winter mornings if I'm late - he certainly has a clock in his head.

He can be very noisy, in fact when I used to send him to a livery yard when I was away on holiday the YO remarked that he was exceptionally noisy. Not so much at home when life is settled.

I just spent a few days with a chatty horse, but the thing I found interesting about him was that his chat was only for other horses and seemed quite specific. I’ve just come back from doing a three day trek through the Snowy Mountains with a couple of brumby runners (amazing experience!). We caught two brumbies and on both occasions my horse had things to say to them and I swear he was trying to reassure them. Likewise when one of the guys returned to us after following a mob, my horse checked in with their horse with a ‘welcome back. Everything alright?’ More than a whicker, not quite a neigh. Confident but polite.

Mine usually calls good morning when he sees me walking to his stable. He will sometimes shout when he hears my voice (not seeing me) when he wants more hay. But the one that gets me is the squeal he makes when he bucks!!
