Voices of reason needed, I'm having a mad 5 minutes

I’ve been thinking about this cross and why on Earth anyone in their right mind would want to do it - I can only conclude that it is to catch and kill deer, I genuinely cannot think of any other reason you would want/need a dog of this cross in the UK? Unless I’m being limited and people can think of loads of other reasons of course!!!

The idea is still filling me with horror this morning as well OP ??

You nailed it, Lev.

1. Nobody in their right minds would deliberately cross those breeds.

2. To chase and kill deer, which incidentally is why they breed the bull lurcher, for its tenacity and the ability to bring down large prey. I think it is a "special" kind of person who would take any pleasure from that.

Well-bred saluki or greyhound crosses used to do the job just as well before bull crosses became the fashion. Bull lurchers do not' jack' when tackling 'teeth' and will keep tearing into their quarry even while they are being mauled. Hence their popularity with some people. One of my foster dogs was a bull cross, lovely at home but the only hound type I could not cope with on a long line, he would have put me in hospital thanks to his sheer strength and determination.

A quick google confirms that Mali x salukis, greyhounds, lurchers etc are rather popular with hunting people. There's a forum where everyone seems to call each other "lad" with multiple posts about them. That's a more appropriate setting; I can see them being useful hunting (not my thing at all). As a pet it's a definite no.

You found it as well then.

And whilst I acknowledge that all pups are cute...sorry...the adults are pretty fugly **runs and hides**

In my thankfully limited experience bull lurchers are used for lamping badgers. If you want a dog to work well on badgers you need one that doesn’t mind being bitten.
Years ago, for the same reason, the MFHA advised against using Patterdales as hunt terriers as they will engage a badger underground. Most jrts have enough self preservation to back out.

Cons:

Salukis:

Mad as a box of frogs
ZERO recall at any time
Very high prey drive
Limited brain capacity ?

Malinois:

VERY high prey drive
Extremely aggressive
Just generally nasty aggressive buggers, worse than my bitey unpredictable lurcher ?
Big

Does that help? ????

So that could be a mix with very high prey drive, clever and with hound like cunning and zero recall as well as large and aggressive !!! And people tell me I was mad to get a terrier...o_Oo_Oo_O:D:D:D
