Volunteering BE?

Has anyone volunteered with BE, I have some spare time from the middle of August until October and have always loved being a spectator at competitions, so have thought about volunteering with BE. I doubt you get petrol costs covered so I'd just be interested in events in the South, but would be happy to do fence judging, control or commentating work, score calculations or writing for the dressage judge, the last two I've got a fair bit of experience in through BUCS. Just wondering on people's experiences doing this.
 
Yes, I've fence judged, done scoring and dressage writing (In fact just spent the weekend at Hendersyde BE doing just that).

My old boy is retired now so while I've got the time I try to help. I really enjoy it though. No, you won't get expenses covered but you should be well provided for re: food and drinks, and sometimes a gift too.

Go for it, they need all the volunteers they can get :)
 
How do I go about it?

From what I've gathered, sign up as a volunteer on the BE website and then contact local events saying you are available?

Go for it ! It is great that you want to help, in my view the whole sport would fold it it were not for very generous people like you. It is actually a lot of fun too. You should register at the BE site, there is a good web based 'area' for volunteers. They have quite a few social things too, and you get to ride the courses sometimes on days just for volunteers/fence judges. I would then contact your local event organisers and let them know you are available. Good luck !
 
Just look on BDWP to see what is going on & phone any you fancy. I help at BE events local to me & doubt that more than a few of the Fence Judges are registered. I registered after my first couple but it hasn't made any difference. The venue I help at has a list of regulars & finds more through putting a notice up etc (it's a regular comp venue) & by regulars telling their friends.
 
Definitely do it - I've always found it to be a fun day and it's great to meet people from different walks and watch the action. You'll be well looked after, too.

They do appreciate all the hands they can get - it's really not always easy drumming up enough to actually make it run (this goes for unaff stuff as well). One person I was stewarding with one day suggested every competitor should have to put in a certain amount of hours - e.g. half a day per year - to keep numbers up, give back and see what it's like on the other side. Nice idea but ho hum :)

I know Solihull are desperate for people for 17/18 Aug if you're in the area.

ETS ignore the last bit; just seen you're in the South but same goes for anyone who *is* local!

I think it should be compulsory for everyone who competes to put in at least a half day per year. There are 1 or 2 who need to see things from the other side, but really it is fun. I'm sad I can't get the day off to be at Keysoe's first intermediate.
