Does anyone have experience towing with a Volvo XC60? I only know a couple of people who have first-hand experience and they've said it's great to tow with, but there isn't much info out there so I just want to get more views!

I'm open to other vehicles, however it would be my main car for daily use as well so it needs to also be efficient with reasonable tax, which they seem to be.

I have a rising 4yr old ID x Cob who is (currently) 16.2HH but will get into the 17s, and I would be initially hiring a trailer (511 probably due to her size) as we haven't yet ventured out so it would just be to get used to loading, going out to clinics etc before I commit to buying one, so it wouldn't necessarily be that regular.

I know the towing capacity of the model variants vary, but I'd be looking at one with 2300-2400kg. She's currently roughly 600kg and the trailer is around 1T so I know I'd be within the limits, just want to get some more first hand experiences with regards to the car itself and what it's like to tow more than anything.

Any experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Ooo watching this with interest as we're getting a xc60 d4 and I'm hoping it'll be woman enough to tow a single trailer. I've read reviews of them towing caravans (all of which are good) and the weight is within the limit, but haven't found any reviews for towing a horse trailer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that couldn't find much info for horse trailers! As you say, seems fab for caravans which are all good but not quite the same!

I don’t tow as much as I used to but have the XC60 D5 and it’s been fine for us. I spent a lot of time googling at the time and I think from memory the higher the torque the smoother and less stress on the engine. Hence I wanted the D5

We compared the xc60 and xc90 when i was looking, OH researched into great depth and detail. We decided the xc90 as there was more room in the back for the dogs and horse stuff, that is the main reason.
However if it was just me, with no dogs, i would have gone for the smaller xc60 as the 90 is a big car as a daily run-around.

Thank you for all of your help so far. Having done some more research and made some calls regarding cars I'm interested in, I'm a bit confused. On the towing capacity websites and the car sales websites, the XC60s I've shortlisted all say max towing capacity of 2400kg, however when I've followed this up with the dealers they've said £1590kg which is absolutely not enough. Am I doing something wrong?! This is all a bit of a minefield for me but the need for a car is now greater as my current one has gone caput so I want to make a fairly quick decision but it must be right of course. Am I doing something wrong?! *Edited to add* I'm looking for a petrol rather than a diesel as I work from home, therefore will only be doing short journeys. I know this adds to my difficulties, and it's very possible I've got things wrong due to this.

I know there are different versions of that model (I'm looking at D4 but they do a D5 which can tow 500kg more) so I assume it's the version you're looking at and that it's petrol? It's so confusing unless you know about cars!

So I've been looking at the T5 as I was under the impression that towed 2.4T, but like you said there are so many different versions they're all so different. The websites don't necessarily display the information which makes it even harder! I know someone with a B6 I think (petrol) who tows but they're proving hard to find in my budget (Under £20k).

I’m currently purchasing a xc60 and wanting to do the same trailer etc.
from what I’ve read going for a D4 or D5 version gives more torque and is kinder to the engine.
Mine is neither so looks like well be carrying one horse at time 😂😂
My 2 horse dream is all but a dream 😂😂

I have a XC60 D5 (2t towing capacity) and have done considerable towing with one horse (1550kg inc trailer) and have done a ‘needs must’ yard move trip with both onboard which would’ve been 1900kg, it tows a dream and I also do about 30k miles a year not towing, however it is a big torquey diesel engine so the petrol is going to be completely different.

I looked at changing my car recently and an XC60 was on the list. You definitely need the diesel one. The XC90 is much bigger and would carry a lot of stuff. In the end l decided to stick with 3.5 Horsebox and a smaller car.

Good question. I don’t have any specific advice on that particular vehicle, but it’s worth bearing in mind - as you clearly are - that towing capacity is only part of the picture. A vehicle may be rated to pull a given weight, not all are well suited to doing so in practice; suspension and brakes, in particular, can wear very quickly if they’re not designed for regular towing.
