Need to buy a new (well around a 2010 model) 4x4 and am looking at a Touareg, as well as a couple of other cars (Discovery 4 or Mercedes M class).

Do you own a Touareg and can give any good or bad points?

Fab car tows like a dream - only got rid of mine as it'd done 180000 miles and I'd had it since new - don't miss the tax on it tho'

Nice to have a B+E on licence so you can not be restricted in your search for a towing vehicle ... unlike those who want to tow on a B licence

We have just part exchanged ours for something else. Its been fab at towing however incredibly hard on fuel as said above (that may be because we went for the 3.2 petrol engine though and not diesel, probably a mistake!) Ours was an 06 plate and unfortunately completely unreliable but I think we were just unlucky, I'm sure it was jinxed!

We looked at one in the dealership where we bought our current car and the interior was horrid. Very cheap looking.

Although I'm pretty sure that doesn't effect the towing ability!

I LOVE MINE! She's called Clarissa and she's BEAUTIFUL. She's glorious to drive, and I feel so safe in her. Definitely go for it.

We have a VE touareg. 5.0 V10. Its a fab car to drive and tow with, its effortless. We currently get 20+ MPG on day to day driving although its quite alot, its no more than the petrol Audi quattro that the OH have before hand.

We would get a 3.0 diesel but own a BMW X5 at the moment so the MPG won't be a shock!

Having towed with a few different cars, I'd always choose a Land Rover. A Defender would be my choice but understand the need for comfort if it's also an everyday car and found the Discovery pretty good to tow with too - they both feel a lot more stable and 'grunty' than my Dad's Touareg. They just feel like that's the job they're made for. When I borrowed it as my Discovery was sick (reliability is the only criteria where a VW would win I think!) I was worried pulling my 510 with two big horses up the steep hill to our yard in my Dad's car (even though it was well within its towing weight) but with both my old Discovery and my current Defender, I put them in low range and they pull themselves up the hill, I don't even have to use the accelerator.
