Loooking for a new 4x4 to tow my 510. Currently have a shogun but like the look of the Touraeg. Does anybody have any experience of towing with these and are they up to the job?

We bought one in August as we had to replace our old BMW X5. Couldn't afford a newish X5 so after looking for something with a good towing weight (3500) we debated between a Discovery, Mercedes or Touareg. Husband liked the Touareg best as it was also to be our family car.

I have nothing bad to say about its towing capabilities as it tows our two horses in a 506 happily (15.1 and 14.3). I took one of the horses from Hampshire to Wales and it got me out of a muddy field easily. Personally the only I don't like is that there are too many fancy electrics - more things to go wrong in my opinion! Ours is the new model.

Fantastic for towing!

My friend has a 2015 one who tows a car trailer and race car, its a lovely car to be in and with a 3.5t towing capacity I'm considering an R Line myself (or a Nissan Navara) in the next few months. Not quite decided what to order yet!

Brill car. My other half bought the 5.0 V10 touareg a year and a half ago and its been brilliant. Tows with ease. I feel really comfortable towing it and I only passed my B&E test in July last year.

I normally tow with a Shogun, but ours is off the road at the minute so a friend with a Touareg moved our boys for us last weekend. Can't complain, it pulled the box well (with a 16.1 and a 17.2 in it) and managed up the monstrous hill to the house with no issues. Felt very stable despite the wind.

We are on our second one bought from new and we love it. Great towing vehicle. All I would say is be careful buying a new one if you aren't having your tow bar factory fitted - if it is factory fitted at the time of purchase they upgrade the engine fan, if not it can cause all sorts of problems and cost a lot of money to sort after the event (around £1000 I was told by someone who had the problem). Bizarrely (and don't quote me as we didn't have the problem) VW will not guarantee it to tow anything if the fan is not upgraded. Ours is the R-line and my only complaint we have is that as it is a 'sporty' model the wing mirrors are smaller than the old Altitude ones were.
ETA we tow an Equi Trek carrying a 17.3 warmblood, so quite a lump on the back..
