Dad's decided he wants to take in a few ex-battery hens. I'm so happy - we had chickens at our old house and I loved looking after them and having fresh eggs all the time! I didn't think we'd have any at this house because the garden's quite small, but we're having some useless decking taken up so dad wants to put a chicken coop in its place. Hooray!

Ahhhhhh!! Chickies are awesome, ex battery hens become such characters after they've settled in

We had some and they had no feathers and were quite in poor condition and it was so rewarding to see them fill out and re-grow feathers and look healthy. Have fun with them

Thats brilliant! I rescued over 100 with my friend last year - free range ones though, they keep them for two years and then have them all necked or electocuted or whatever they do, because theyre past their laying age, but they still have plently of laying left in them! - we gave them to our farrier, his friends, friends of friends etc!

I'm told they're very tame, is that true?

My sister wants to get baby chicks instead of adult hens because they're cuter, but I hope I can persuade dad to get ex battery ones instead - it's so nice giving animals a second chance.

They're v friendly! I'd get battery ones, they lay about 2 a day and to see them flap their wings in the mornings its just so pleasing

please find below a picture of a chicken i rescued - it was lying on its side with its eyes closed soaking wet in a puddle. I force fed it bits of barley and sucked up water through a straw and opened its beak and fed it to it hahaha it did the trick though, it came round bless it!!

sorry) as I was finishing up at the yard so had to put the 5 ex battery hens into their little house so they don't get eaten. But OMG it took me half an hour to get the last 2 b*ggers in and I came away with a ripped top, bloody knee and nettle stings from chasing the damn things round. Arghhhh

The chickens we had at our old house weren't noisy - we accidentally got a couple of cockerels (they all look the same when they're chicks!) and they were obviously crowing all the time, which was loud and annoying, but we got rid of them and the hens were no bother at all. It was the ducks that made the most noise... I reeeeally wish we could have ducks again, we had Indian Runners which look like bowling pins on legs and they're so funny!

But dad says they'll mess up the garden more than hens do.
