waiting for the farrier

Ha! I always book my farrier for 8 in the morning, then he's always on time - My farrier is very good though anyway but I've had farriers in the past who have been 2/3 hours late!! That's ok when you're a teenager and at the yard all day but when you work and have kids, etc it's a pain in the bum!

I am exceptionally lucky to have a wonderful farrier who is always ahead of time. We are also very lucky he is alway on the yard on a Friday so if I have a lots shoe he can help.

My farrier is so punctual. I was actually really surprised when I first employed him as all my previous farriers were always late, often by as much as a couple of hours. But my current farrier has been on time give or take five minutes for ten years. Usually he is bang on time. I don't know how he does it.

I don't mean to make everyone jealous, but mines always early ! A couple of times I've come back from a hack to find him sitting in the driveway waiting for me to unlock the gate !

Mine is either on time or only 20ish minutes last at worst and that's mainly due to either previous horse needed a bit extra time or traffic. The one time he knew he was going to be stupidly late he rang to change time to next day.

My farrier is always early, says he will be at the yard for 8.30 then I get there and his already been there 20 mins waiting then makes me feel like im late :)

mine has been like this all the time I have known him .......'mumble...mumble...almost 27yrs....shhhh makes me feel old...'

My old farrier was always at least half an hour early. Early on in using him I arrived about 15 mins before his 'due' time to find he had already got three shoes on my pony! We had inherited him with the pony when we bought her so as he had been shoeing her for over 15 years he was happy to do her with noone else there. He was an excellent farrier, only don't use him now as he retired (how dare he lol!) and lives 140 miles away since I moved.

My current farrier is usually on time, if he is running early or late he texts or rings to alter the time. I'm quite close to his base so I'm usually first or last.

Mine is like that - he offers exact time slots and I have never known him to be anything other than a few minutes either side of the time. I often wonder if he parks up around the corner looking at his watch before making an appearance!

I'm afraid I simply don't understand why anyone would put up with persistent, chronic lateness from any service provider . . . any farrier who consistently showed up more than 20-odd minutes late would be swiftly replaced - no matter how good they were. Ditto any farrier who moaned, grumbled, whinged about being asked to put road nails/stud holes, etc. in, or was just plain unresponsive.

My current farrier is ace . . . by way of example: when Kal had emergency surgery on his right hock, the vet (obviously) removed all of his shoes. When he came home, I wanted him re-shod so texted my farrier to ask if he could come out - we hadn't negotiated a day or time - I spent that day at the yard waiting for my vet to come out and change Kal's bandages (he was mega-late because there was a snowstorm) - I got home to receive a call from a fellow livery to say that my farrier was AT the yard to re-shoe my horse - which he did, saying I could pay him when I next saw him.

I used to have a farrier who would be days late. He was such a good farrier though :/.

Now I have a farrier who is always spot on time and also texts me 10 mins before he arrives.

I have the opposite problem. Yard is round the corner from work and I finish at 3. So book farrier for 3:30 onwards and he is always early! Booked him to come out to check horses abscess as he wasn't showing any improvement after 5 days. Said he would be around 6:30pm and he was done and dusted by half 5 :-)

I usually get a call if my farrier is going to be late but, frankly, I wouldn't mind if he didn't as horses (and their owners!) are unpredictable.

Like one of my liveries who booked two farriers for the same day and time. Both turned up on time…but the horse owner didn't -- at all!

Farriers have my utmost respect. I would be able to cope with the horses but not the owners! For the same reason, I am always glad that I dropped out of vet college.

I think Farriers are Time Lords in disguise like Dr Who & their vans are a tardis . Time behaves very differently for them but they never seem to notice.

Very true, made me pmsl. I book our farrier for 8am and he usually turns up at around 7.. gagging for tea, with his boots unlaced and looking very rumpled!

Same here...and on the odd occasion he has run late over the years he's called me to tell me he's on his way

Desperation. One of the main reasons I stuck with my last farrier for as long as I did even though I knew he wasn't doing the best job ever was because he actually turned up when he said he would.

Mine is always really early! Last week I had a 7.45am appointment. He knew horse would be in overnight and often does him without me being there. He turned up about 6.30am and had been and gone by the time I arrived!

My farrier is almost always early. I always book him for first thing in the morning as we have so many horses here and he's with us all morning doing them. I live on site so it wouldn't bother me if he was late though, but for those who travel, or take time off work, to wait at a yard for a farrier, well I can totally understand their frustration.

My last appointment was for 7am and my farrier turned up at.... 7am :) He's always punctual.
Lots of different farriers visit our yard - some arrive on time, many are late or text at the last minute to say they'll come another day. That kind of service is not for me though, I work for a living and everything and everybody has to run to schedule otherwise there is chaos!

Back in the 90's I had to put up and shut up, there weren't enough farriers to cover the work so they could breeze in when ever they fancied. Now the market is a lot better served they seem to have upped their game. Mine is good and will lets us know if he's running late.

We have ours at 8am as the first call. - always on a Thursday as he's from a fair distance away then goes to a local riding school and does the best part of a day there. I pay him when he arrives and leave him to get on with it and go to work and he turns the boys out when he's done. The only time he's ever been late was when the motorway was closed and he texted, said to leave the cheque and horses in and get to work. He was stuck on the motorway for 5 hours and still came to us and the riding school, staying until 8pm to get the job done.

This, on both counts! The original one might have been the one in the old joke about the sexual position called "The Farrier" - you're in all day and nobody comes!!........ Sorry, couldn't resist! ;-)

My farrier is ace, always on time and always happy to fit in at short notice, horse lost a shoe two days before the vet was coming to investigate lameness came out the next day to put shoe on, never have to ask for stud holes he knows what times of year we need them! brilliant with the horse and on one or two occasions when he's been late because of previous horses he just says to leave her in and he'll sort her or if I can't get out of work he's happy to do her on his own, always discusses stuff with me first and is just a good egg!
