Just pondering - I am off with one of my friends whom has 3 horses to go and see a yard with NO spaces.... is there any point? - The YO is happy to run a waiting list but I have asked her how she will get on with out telling lies if she can only move one at a time? ie what would she tell her current yard about the dissaperance of one of the horses whilst she keeps the other two there and so on and so on.

If you do have a wait list how long does it normally take for a space to arrive? - I know of one yard where folks have been waiting for 12 months for a space to come up, yet I know of others that have 8 or 10 empty stables constantly year round.

Thanks for the input - not trying to be defeatest but 3 horses to a very popular yard looks a little bit of a mountain to climb to me - or is that me just being a pessamist ?

If I really like the sound of a potential client I add them to my waiting list. I only have five liveries at any one time and the last time someone left was 18 months ago. So it's very rare that a space comes up. On the rare occasion I have a space, I have found that the people on my list have found somewhere else and are happily settled. Of course, you never know what is round the corner. Around 3 years ago I lost someone totally unexpectantly because she had fallen out with another client and she moved her two horses. Sometimes, you know if you have a vacancy coming up, for example if a client is going to uni. But unless this livery loses 3 clients in quick succession, it is probably a waste of time for your friend to be on their waiting list. How big is the yard? As the larger the yard, the quicker spaces come up.

i dont know whether our yard has a waiting list but if it does then i think it must be LONG! and take a long time to get to the bottom.. people at our yard keep buying new horses so currently we have 3 new horses yet no one has left.. i think people are hoping someone will leave before they have to come in in the winter!

I have a waiting list but those waiting normally have to wait till one of my current liveries dies! Sometimes it's the ones on the waiting list who die before a box is vacated .
I have an equine hospice;)

I sympathise with your friend, Gingerwitch; as the owner of three it's almost impossible to find a decent yard which has three spaces at the same time. I've had to move them (for work) when I've only had two stables - and left them out until a third stable was free.
Luckily the YOs are normally quite cooperative...but it's still not easy.
S :D

My last yard did a waiting list.
It went through phases of being full to the brim for 6 months, then 3-4 liveries would leave.
It all depended on if we liked the person who was inquiring, or if they seemed to be the type to stir up trouble ;)

I actually think its a good idea to say you have a waiting list - then if you dont like the livery you just never get round to offering him or her a place ;) - is that a naughty thought.

The yard was fantastic - but how on earth my friend will afford £1200 a month, plus 20 quid for horse box parking - then shoes and lessons and entry fees and suplements - anything above chaff and pony mix you have to pay yourself.

Phew for that type of cash I would give up work and look after her 3 at the current yard !

Certainly all the yard I've been on operate a wait list system but it mainly is used to eek out the dead wood. If you come across as the person who will fit in with the established members then you get in as soon as there is a place regardless of your position on the list. TBH it sounds harsh but it works.
