Wales or the Fens-ish area?

Okay, so we're gonna move

. Would like to be gone by the end of this year!

We want.... a house with land, good hacking/cycling country, preferably reasonably close to the sea (youngest daughter wants to take up subaqua diving!). Reasonably easy-ish access to the motorway system would be nice.

So far, given our budget and our likes, we've narrowed it down to either: north of Cambridge/east of Peterborough; or, mid/south/west Wales. My forefathers are Welsh, so it would be quite nice to go back there as it were (have told the kiddettes that they'd have to learn Welsh

Also, daughter and I want to be able to compete (show jumping, cross-country type things, and PC).

A friend, and you know who you are lol, has suggested a completely different part of the country, which we're looking into

Wales if I had to choose- as long as you have your own lorry showing/comps are good- hacking is good and a lot of open area/open land/common land/brideways. You get more for your money there too BUT jobs are few and far between.
 
The Pembrokeshire coast for you Mrs!

Simply stunning scenery. Easily accessible to the M4 for travel - and of course the sea on your doorstep!

Wales! if you go up Western Wales you will get better value for money re: housing and Land etc.

South wales is damn expensive for not a lot!
 
I'm East of P'boro, and the Fens are very nice as long as you can cope with the flatness (some can't!) Hacking is great, very safe, hardly any hedges + flatness means drivers can see you a mile away, literally, and vice-versa. For me, that alone makes it brilliant. Plenty of competitions, and not bad at all for motorways etc once you get to A1. the area north of P'boro going up the A1 is good too.
re: subaqua - the seas around England are chuffing freezing and very murky. My boyfriend is the keenest diver on the planet and tough as hell, and we're only 5 miles from the sea, but even he won't go in the sea around here...!!!

That's why I mentioned the M4. Easy travelling.
 
I moved 10 years ago,and my choices were Wales or East Anglia, I am pleased we choose here. The hacking is brilliant and people nice and property cheap. If you need somewhere to stay while looking we have a B&B and are always getting people staying house hunting. www.crosskeys.info

west wales is ok for local shows bad for affilated even the centres dont have particularly great services (part from broomes)
 
South Wales!! It takes me ten mins to get to the beach (adequate standard) and 20 to get to another (sublime standard). I currently hack to RC (or will do once I get in) and there's stuff a plenty going on here. I am on the doorstep of a good competition venue (Pencoed college) which also does RC and only about 30mins drive away from Sunnybank EC (Caerphilly way) which holds the lions share of HT's/SJ and showing shows. Again about 30 mins from Alps which also does HT and SJ (I think they do SJ?) Plus you'll be near enough for me to come kiss the lovely Dizz!

Fenland only if you can cope with the flat - I know it sounds obvious but it is unbelievably flat flat flat! The only proviso is make sure you live somewhere where you can easily get onto a dual carriageway. Driving aroud Norfolk does my head in as only single carriageway A-roads and absolutely bat-sh*t crazy drivers overtaking like Lewis Hamilton...

where do you hack? we've been looking at property around holbeach etc and cant find any bridleways worth mentioning. there's only the long one along the drain and I dont fancy a ducking!

I would look fens-ish way - is plenty of choice around and if you go a bit north (Vale of Belvoir) etc you still have hills. Good easy access to A1 and east coast railway, loads of horsey stuff both competitions and otherwise. As for daughter learning to dive I am a qualified diver and would rather never dive again than dive in this country!!

The water is freezing and the visibility is rubbish and there isn't really much to see anyway - tell her to wait until she can do it in warm water!! If she really wants to learn the place all the divers use is actually Stoney Cove in Leicestershire!! failing that there is another gravel pit they all use called Gildenburgh near Whittlesey in Peterborough!! The east is also the driest part of the country so our winters are never quite as bad or muddy or wet as Wales!!!

Daughters are happy about wherever, though youngest wants to see dolphins - wants to be a Zoologist and play with the big sea mammals

I'm in West Wales near Cardigan, beautiful countryside and stunning coastline. I live about a mile from the sea, in the winter you can ride on the beaches.

The wildlife is amazing - dolphins, seals and porpoises and the occasional whale or two. In the autumn we go to our nearest cove to see the seals and their seriously cute pups on the beach. I also have both the Preseli and Cambrian Mountains within an hours trailer ride from my home

I've lived in Wales for just over 6 years now and absolutely love it. It does help if you learn a little Welsh, if only to pronounce the place names, it's not an easy language to learn but the children seem to pick it up in no time.
