Walker Rugs

well thats what i was thinking . . . i can't see many benefits to having them and not sure when it comes down to it whether i could actually be bothered to change the horse out of their nice warm stable rugs, for a quick spin on the walker, just to change them back again 20 mins later! (mine only usually use the walker in the depths of winter if the fields are closed fro a couple of days

I do think they have a purpose, annoyed you can't get them in pony sizes.

If I'm using a walker then I'm expecting a good March, normal rug is too restrictive across the shoulder/wither

I was actually looking at buying a walker rug as everyone at my yard uses them and this makes me think that I need things! Lol. But then I did wonder if they are just selling a false need. I suppose they are less restrictive to an extent and won't rub.

I think you can get them in pony - I had a meeting at a yard where everything had them on and they had a few under 14.2, maybe they had some specially made or adapted?

I quite like them, but I only think there's any point if horses are on the walker for a long time (which I don't like anyway). I just like them becauseI like rugs :p

As a luxury they are nice to have, when we had freezing weather last year I also used mine when I lunged, also handy if it was raining.... But I got mine reduced on eBay as a treat

Nobody on our yard uses them. Have been known to put a thermy on when putting horse on walker to dry off after a bath in cold weather, but otherwise horse is naked on the walker. Our walker is covered, I might be tempted to something to keep the rain off if it wasn't I suppose.

What the heck is a walker rug? Going to have to google that.

We just used to sling a quarter sheet on and use a roller and breast girth.

OK. Duly googled. Basically a rug with leg room.

I think I need one but not for putting her on a walker. Just for when out riding and leading. Easier than using a roller to keep an exercise rug on, I think.

Not sure if they are up to the job tho.

I use a waterproof one for the led horse for riding and leading I think they are great for this but I wish you could get a hi viz one.

What make have you got? Just wondered if the clips are a bit plasticy and would it fit round the front of my cob. The horseware night rider looks amazing for this purpose other than the hole in it for the saddle :(

The walker rug I use is a horse wear one
Can't keep a horse dry with a rug with a hole for the saddle .

Couple of people on my yard have them and use them for lunging as well as the walker. I thought they looked like a good idea leaving the shoulders free for exercise when lunging in the rain or very cold.

ETA I still think they are a bit pricey for what they are. They seem more than exercise sheets which I would say are similar in terms of materials and technology. I suspect as they gain in popularity it will get a bit more competitive

Can't remember the brand, but mine was off ebay, similar to the Horsewear one, but a lot cheaper. I use it for leading out, and for ground work when it is all frozen.

It stops them getting bare shoulders from rubs.

I too wish mine was Hgh Viz.

ETA, mine is a Mark Todd.

Yes, this is what I was thinking of getting one for. We don't have a walker but I do walk mine out a lot. I normally just use a lightweight turnout if it's raining as we do only potter along, but perhaps a rug more designed for the purpose would be better.

Guys you're not very helpful - i was hoping to come one here and be told that no they are ridiculous and you don't need one!

But now i think i do need one for early morning lunging, walking etc!

I think horse walkers are not good for horses but you do need a walker rug regardless 😂

I don't have a walker , I am our horse walker, my horses do lots of walking exercise .
But I am a big believer in leading horses from another horse for lots of reasons and the walker rug I have on loan from a friend is great for this .

Yes I do too. But walking in circles is not good. Riding and leading is excellent.
