My horse has a bone chip in his hind leg just below stifle. He is allowed out in a small area (he has a fenced off area of woodchip about 20ft x 20ft) so he cant run around/twist funny.
He has been getting really bored so I have been taking him for little walks 5-10 mins in hand

But im not sure if I should be as he is very exciteable, he does rear a couple of times on the walk generally (we've only been about 5 times) but isnt too silly - no more than he does in his paddock

I lead him out in bridle, sidereins, and lunge line and obv hat!!

has anyone had experience of this before and what to do (cant get hold of vet atm, think hes away!) he got the original injury xmas day but chip wasnt found until x rays on 29th Jan.

He has been advised we need at least 7 more months off atm (subject to change tho) and I really dont fancy trying to walk him after all that time in

I dont want to hurt him but I dont want him to be bored and unhappy at the same time

(dont have a horse walker)

Well done for getting this far

vets said they didnt want him on grass coz he would churn it up really quickly coz its such a small area and his leg is at most risk twisting

i have grazed him in hand a couple of times right by his paddock and stable and he was ok with that

he does have ad lib haylage/readigrass/swedes and treat ball in his 'field' to try and keep him occupied

Im in the same position.I have grass turnout but it has to be restricted because of hock surgery.I dont know if this would work for you but I have taped about 6 small inter locking paddocks with small entrances so my horse can walk through to each one but not canter. This way he has access to grass the field doesnt get to churned because i move the tape every 3 to 4 days and he is happy walking about and grazing.
He has had one loony moment but overall is much happier I have done this before for ligament and tendon injury with my vets approval.I will be walking out in hand after a few more days because we have just done month of box rest .I know my horse will have the odd spin but I use a pressure halter and that seems to work well.

Been doing the same - walking in hand - and I put a post up here asking for advice on kit etc. I now do her in a bridle (a pelham because she likes the feel better than any snaffle), with a lunge rein. I also now use Sedalin when necessary and this has proved to be a godsend for those times when the wind or the hormones are raging (she has to be done EVERY day).
