Walking in hand and road rage.

I have a horse that needs road walking in hand post injury.

We had a nasty experience yesterday with a local who couldn’t wait two minutes for us on a minor country road, tried to squeeze past us and then shouted abuse out through her window. We shouldn’t be on the road or we shouldn’t be so far out according to her.

She said she has horses and knows how to drive, it’s a single car width road and she drove straight at us.

Fine, you get people like that. Unfortunately we walked past her later on and she launched in to us again.

I don’t want to stop walking him on the road but wondered if anyone has knowledge of a strap that I can attach my phone to, so I can record next time? I have a go pro but it’s got such poor battery life and I only have a hat strap.

I have reported to police and BHS road rage survey.
 
I was quite shocked that it was another horse person, I had my daughter with me which made it worse.

I will be more on the ball next time, doesn’t make for a relaxing time for any of us. She threatened to find me on the yard, I have made owner aware.
 
Make sure you're being compliant ie fully decked out in hi viz, horse in bridle, hat/gloves et so she has nothing g she can use as an excuse eg she didnt see you

I'd wear your go pro regardless, she doesn't know it's not filming.

Is your daughter able to film when cars approach since shes not holding a horse?

People are truly disgusting at times.WTF is this persons problem???
 
What is wrong with some people :mad:
Horses and pedestrians and cyclists for that matter have been on the roads for centuries before cars. What has changed that people can't control their aggression.

At least when you're in a car and someone gets aggressive you can lock the doors and close the windows. Pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists can't do that.
 
From a horse person to say we shouldn’t be on the road too 🤔.

My daughter was quite mature (teen) and said all horses are unpredictable so she then started criticising our choice of headcollar.

I wouldn’t be so bothered if I hadn’t realised she lives opposite the livery.

Always good when YO is on your side!! As others have said take the go-pro or film on camera people tend to be less loud about things when they are filmed. You have every right to walk your horse in hand on the road. I had to do similar when my boy did a tendon lots of in hand walking on a straight line.
 
YO has known us for a long time and knows we don’t cause trouble or get involved with drama. Might have looked bad if we had just joined there.
 
I hand walk my retiree on the road and often have cars squeeze past or zoom past with stickers saying 'slow down for horses'. Obviously not my horse then!

I'm always in high Viz and even though he's a saint he gets led in his bridle. It's not because he'll misbehave it's just so if anything does go wrong then I can show I did everything right.

I think you're just going to have to ignore the nasty lady. Some people are just horrible and I always hope for karma!
 
Some people are just angry asshats. I would just make sure you are leading in a bridle and hi viz so if anything else kicks off you can say you were doing everything right at your end. I hack on very quite roads but wear every bit of hi viz I can get on myself and horse... just so if anything happens there's as little room as possible for victim blaming.

If she starts again say "ok, do you want to talk to the police about it, I'm happy for you to report me? I'll ring them now for you, get them to come for a chat"

If you have 3rd party liability insurance (can get via BHS or Harry Hall One Club) I think you need a bitted bridle or its viewed that you weren't in control of the horse... cant say I agree with that statement but it's in some small print so I'd err on the side of caution especially if you're dealing with a horsey whack job
 
As you know where she lives I’d log it with the police. Just say you are aware you don’t have any concrete proof, but want it logged in case there’s a next time. I’d then use the Go Pro and if it does happen again make sure you remain calm and forward footage to the police.
 
Get a picture of her index and phone the non-emergency number for advice. Tell them you were threatened, that’s absolutely unacceptable. What did she threaten to do?
 
Take the reg number, report it to the police. It's harassment, and potentially assault (as she drove the car at you). Depends on your area, but the police here would take the time to visit for a quiet chat.
 
Unfortunately I doubt the police will take much interest, especially without any evidence.

Definitely lead out in a bridle and Hi-Viz. I also find carrying a schooling whip, with flourescent tape wrapped around the end, out at an angle into the road keeps the cars off you. If it happens again you could try recording it on your phone or get a new Go-pro or battery and wear your hard hat when leading on the road.
