We seem to have strayed from dogs to humans.

Human skeletons dont fuse till we are teenagers, yet kids play sport, use stairs, jump around, compete in sports. You dont ever hear anyone saying kids shouldnt be climbbing stairs or playing rough games. Its accepted that exercise is not just good, but needed for healthy bones and development.
My sister, a keen netball player, developed a lump on her knee at secondary school. Osgood Schlatter disease. Due to sport.

Edited to correct name of the disease.

Our conformation is completely different and there are lots of people wrecked by doing too much. At any age.
My friend has had to have major surgery on his feet because of running. There are loads of people with injuries and arthritis and needing bits of metal in them, due to sports/over exertion.

I don't know why people are so resistant to using a ramp.

I started using a ramp 13 years ago when I had a dog with degenerative myelopathy, all the other dogs I had at the time also used it and I've continued using a ramp since then. None of the dogs have had any problems using a ramp.

It does no harm to use a ramp, it only takes seconds to set it up, and if it helps to prevent degenerative changes in the forelimbs then that's all to the good.

No negatives from using one that I can see.

There are people on the forum who've been unable to train their dogs to use a ramp when they are no longer able to jump and have struggled to lift them. Aside from it not being comfortable for the dog to be lifted when its in pain, it can't be good for the person's back either.
Friends are on their second Burnese Mountain Dog. Having the first meant that the second was ramp trained from day one.

I posted about Michael Moseley and his programme on bone density a couple of days ago. He said impact increases this so is overall good but I would limit jumping down/stairs etc regardless of health of the dog.

In the human context, stairs are my least favourite, I feel it in my knee. I might be over cautious re dogs jumping out, but it's also a safety issue.

I'm quite happy to walk away from mine who wouldn't dream of getting out once in the boot. Obviously I wouldn't risk it at a services, for example, but at home or in the woods, I know they won't budge.

There are many good and pratical ramps on the market. it take a bit of work and time to set them up but if
your dog goes in the car daily, it probably worth it.

It seems to be all about common sens really.

Stop lying.

Everyone is welcome to search, there is zero video of Broom running up and down stairs because it never happened. Yet another CT lie.

While my dog was, and is, healthy your then pup, mitch, was crated with a bad back and you wrote that goose gets sore after "puppy zoomies". That isn't normal.

My dog is health tested and from a whole line of health tested dogs. I did my research and bought from a good breeder with a proven hsitory of producing successful dogs. Yours aren't. Stop acting like you know anything about dogs, let alone mine.
Because you deleted the pictures after I messaged you after you posted how he’d been ‘zooming up and down the stairs’ after a big walk across hills. Your message re how ridiculous it was that I posted a derogatory comment re your puppy (btw, I absolutely did not identify you or your puppy in my post on here, so well done for outing yourself) and how I shouldn’t say anything given Mitch had issues, at the time undiagnosed, was frankly spiteful. Forgive me for saying that your pictures of your puppy going across hilly terrain and then saying that he was doing zoomies up and down the stairs was concerning. But, obviously, as you said in your message-which I won’t post given it’s against T&Cs-your mum is a renowned breeder who said it was ok (in her/your opinion). I only know this because you published pictures (subsequently deleted) hence my concerned message. How else could I possibly have know?

You are probably aware that Mitch had HIF, as you are clearly clocking my posts. I’ve been fortunate to not encounter that in the others that I’ve known. As Druid and his specialist orthopaedic surgeon at Davies in Dunstable said, there is no way of knowing a dog has this unless you do a particular scan at a very particular angle. No breeder (even Druid, forgive me for using her again, said she doesn’t do this scan on a post if you’d like to check the posts about Mitch’s ‘catastrophic break’) does this scan, only x rays, which don’t show this issue.

‘Yet another CT lie?’ When have I ever lied? I’m not renowned for lying, in fact, I am far too honest about issues. I never lie, I have been overly honest re my dogs’ issues, never said anything that wasn’t the absolute truth, so I’ll thank you not to slander me. Why on earth have you outed yourself and posted this? I didn’t even hint that I was referring to you (you’ve been on UI since the nasty message you sent me years ago, I was alerted to this message by someone else) Perhaps FAT would allow me to publish your private message and mine? You know you deleted your pictures after I messaged you. I’m not the liar.

Usual lie? Please explain. Feel free to ask FAT to publish the pm where I said it perhaps wasn't sensible to let the puppy do zoomies up and down stairs after a long hill walk. At no point did I mention a video. I at a loss as to understand why you would out yourself when I made zero reference to you. You know you deleted photos after my message.

Temper tantrums?! Given you have me on UI, you seem to know a lot about me.

I'm not taking any side in this but look at your replies, you did mention a video.

I think given this went on in 2022, the pm should never have been mentioned by you.

So, generally speaking, historical discussions should never be raised??
Not at all but I don't think the mention of the pm adds anything to the post. She could easily have said. I don't let my puppies do stairs and I believe some people do far too much with their puppies, we always stick to the 5 minute rule.

Anyway my main point is, a video was mentioned.

I just did a quick skim read of the first paper I found and it doesnt mention stairs, or jumping etc a a risk factor, unless the dog has a genetic predisposition and/or risk of dysplasia. Its from 2020 and is a summary of all relevant research to date.

They advocate for low impact controlled exercise, no stairs, jumping, or sudden movements in growing dogs or those predisposed to joint issues.

If I had labs or similar I'd be taking more precautions based on that.

We have Labs, they have always jumped into and out of the car, once they are too big to pick up, until they are in old age and need help. The current cohort usually get into/out of the car twice per week, others have done it daily but a much lower car usually.
