Ive never walked two dogs at once before and for a few weeks ill be walking my friends JRT along with mine. The thing is that the JRT pulls like mad, zig zags and goes wherever she wants. Is there a technique to walking two dogs? Should they be one at each side or both on one side?

This would be an ideal time to teach your mates JRT how to walk on the lead in a civilised way!!
You can have them however you feel most comfortable , one each side or both together...just at heel!!!

I have 4, 3 well behaved lurchers and a collie who thinks if he leaps up and down and nips my leg we'll get there quicker! I keep him on his own on the left on a really short lead so he can't move about too much and have the other 3 on the right and it works fine.

I have 5 dogs, although 1 can't go out with the others after an op on her leg that makes normal walks near impossible. What I tend to do is put 2 in each hand (or one either side if I'm walking 2) and let them walk the length of the leads, so long as they don't pull too much, or they get under my feet - 2 big dogs and 2 small.

If I walk the 2 littlies on their own I have one on either side and do the same as oneofthepack anf walk on a short lead.

Before walking the JRT at the same time as another dog, walk it on its own until it gets the message. A good technique for this is when she pulls, let her go to the end of the lead, then you start walking backwards and give the JRt a few gentle tugs until it is beside you. Praise it when it is beside you. Just keep doing that until the dog gets the message, using the word "Heel" (or whichever command you wish) when you walk backwards. Hopefulle you will be able to get to the point where it starts to walk infront of you and you say "heel" and it will get the message and walk beside you. Depending on how stubborn said JRT is, it could take a few goes before it gets the message. Then I would walk the two dogs one on each side, so if one pulls you have more control.

I regularly walk 3 together (2 labs and a mini schnauzer) and have beem known to walk 4 together. Although I tend to take mine places where they can all be off the leads.

The older lab is never on a lead though which makes things easier so I have a lab in one hand, schnauzer in the other hand and the old lab walks to heel off the lead. (She has to be on my left hand side though so walks beside whatever dog is on the lead on that side, tends to be puppy lab) or if all three off lead, I walk the two labs to heel and schnauzer walks slightly ahead. She likes to be a leader

I have 2 greyhounds and a JRT

I put the JRT on an extendable lead in one hand as she likes to run and the others on ordinary ones in the other hand.

Have to watch for tangles but works fine. When on roads I just put 'em all together and make them heel as I'm in charge!

whatever feels comfy. I walk 3 big dogs and one little, sometimes up to 7 dogs (I suppose the sensible thing would be to split them up, but they enjoy a run!).
My three big ones heel, the little one stays on the lead if necessary, and we go play in the park with any non-well behaved on leads, the rest are always off lead but well behaved

I walk with my two good heeling dogs on my right and my pulling puppy on my left. I have recently put a halti on him as I was putting my back out hoiking him back. Tried everything to get him to heel, but he has a puppy brain at the mo, so will try again when he is older, in the meantime, I have complete control in his halti.
