Walnut Trees

I'm looking to buy some land to keep my 4 on. The perfect field has come up but it has a very large Walnut tree in it. I remembered seeing a post on one of the vet pages about Walnut poisoning. Having done some searching it seems to be black walnut trees in America. I can't find anything English about it. Does anyone know if English Walnut trees are poisonous. I could potentially remove it or fence it off but it's a beautiful old tree (would obviously need to check it hasn't got a TPO on it) and would be amazing for shade and shelter. Just wondering how much of a pain it will be before I put an offer in!

I think you're right, it is black walnut not English which is poisonous.

If it helps, I have a lovely old walnut tree and the horses really show no interest in leaves or walnuts from it- that's if any nuts are left from the squirrels who do an excellent job of picking up EVERYTHING that falls from it

Had a field (in NZ) with two or three massive English walnut trees - don’t think the horses ever touched the nuts (and there would have been thousands) but the dog loved them.

Thank you both it is reassuring that I can't find anything English about it and they aren't that uncommon so you think there would be if they were an issue. There are no Sycamores anywhere near which is a massive bonus.

We have a Walnut tree, not in the field but reading this just made me think although they do grow on the tree its not like having an Oak or Chesntut where the ground underneath is littered with them. The odd few fall but its never really occurred to me so i guess the squirrels must do a good job on it!
