Hi there peeps, I don't normally post in this foram as I'm a horse and cat owner. however now we are really settled in our soon to be 'own' home I really feel I would like a JRT. I'm experienced with dogs and am totally ready to receive a pup into our house but have probs with my bloke.

He is great with animals and we have 2 cats that are house cats but semi-ferral (oh and they are huge), but he says that he doesn't want a dog as he doesn't want a dog as if he wants a lay in then he doesn't want to get up to walk it etc and that he thinks the cats (who we've made so much ground with) will be scared.

I personally want the dog so it will come with me to the yard etc so what does he have to do exersice wise.......as I do everything anyway and the cats will surely be able too put the pup in its place????

What do you all think?

Are we capable of having a JRT/mini JRT and if so, do any of you know of any available in the Herts/beds/Bucks area???

Sorry this is a long post!

H

The cats would probably be a bit put out by the pup as JR tend to be quite playful and fun but I reckon they could soon put him in his place!
It sounds as if you would be fine, wanting to take it out with you etc have you owned a dog before?

Dont ask- inform him !!

Seriously though, my OH isnt really an animal person but is happy to "let me" have what I want as long as they are my responsability.
Just keep telling him that although pup will of course be both of your pet, you will be doing the"work" with it.
No work and all the fun bits seems to apeal to most men!
The cats will prob feel a bit out of place to begin wit but will get used to the pup with a bit of tim and a thoughtfull intro.

JRTs love to chase cats, and some will attack them, so they're not the best breed to have with cats. But if you get a puppy and socialise it with them carefully, I sure they will all find their place in the house and they may even end up curling up together.

I've always had dogs and cats together, and after the initial hissing and spitting, they all live happily together. It's easiest with puppies, but I've brought an 8 yr old big mongrel into the house, and they all ended up not quite best mates, but relaxed together.

In fact, we brought a little semi-feral female cat into the house with an older collie years ago, and she loved him so much she would lie on him and lick his ears. She was much happier with him that she was with people. And that dog loved his cats - he saved one of them from a near death experience with another dog. There wasn't a dry eye in the house!

A puppy play-pen for in the house is a good idea as you can keep the pup and cats seperate until they get used to each other, but the pup can still be in the same room as you. Plus you can relax knowing they can't get to each other when you're not looking. There are loads on the internet (Alpine do a cheap one which is supposed to be good).

And tell your OH to stop being such a lazy so and so and to get out of bed and walk the dog!!

Seriously though, I think if your OH is not 100% about a dog but is happy for you to have one, then you need to be able to do all the work with it yourself. Once he gets attached he might start to take an interest, look on that as a bonus!

Thanks for the helpful hints!

I think the 'play pen ' is a very good idea indeed. my sister puts hers in them when she goes out to stop them eating the house too!

I'm determind it will be a puppy so that the cats can show it whose boss and also have a greater chance of a good relationship. I've never had cats and dogs in the house at the same time so I'm just desperate to not upset the catties more than is necessay.

i'm sure bloke will be all over it when it arrives, hes just a worrier I think and reckons I have too much on my plate as it is. He'll be taking it to the cricket nets before we know it!!!!

dont know these Breeders personally but looks a very professional well thought out website.. but as with all breeders you need to check them out throughly

Im not a Great fan of Internet sites dealing with Multiple Breeds ...i have to say ...did once ask how they police the people who advertise as they claim not to run ads for Puppy farmers & was met with a very unsatisfactory reply ie; Woz Frankly Fob off..
confused.gif
.so i always think its ££££ signs that get these type of sites off the ground not the welfare of the Dogs advertised...

Otherwise go directly to the JRT Breed club Secretary http://www.jackrussell.org.uk/ for advice they will have their finger very much on the pulse as to who's breeding for the right reason

Only my Humble opinion for what its worth

You're spot on. Epupz and their ilk are a magnet for puppymillers/Backyard Breeders. If it's a pup you want, do not think twice and only go through the breed club.

As for breeds, this is a pretty hand guide to those reliable with non-canine pets...

Juliette arrived when Rio our JRT had been the only pet in the family. As she was born in a home with dogs she wasn't scared, didn't run away and he fell in love with her, never chased her and could stand there staring at her, waiting for a signal from her meaning: ok let's play !

Never tried to do her any harm.

Yes, a friend of mine recently had to take her cat to the vets as her mother in laws JRT had tried to kill it. Luckily, they were there when it happened and got the dog off, so the cat got away with some bad bites, otherwise it would have been curtains.

The cat lives very happily with a lovely black lab.

Had you thought about any other breeds?!

Oh BE that is so sweet!

This morning I was brightened to here the wordsd 'When we get a dog.....' spill from OH mouth so maybe my little (!) hints have been having the desired effect......

Hi Bertie, I need somethink little as we live in a smallish cottage. I've always liked JRTs and my sister has managed to have 3 of them and 2 cats living in the same house. Saw an ad for miniture dauchshounds today which got me thinking.....any suggestions of other breeds always welcome!
