Ive decided to sell my landrover and trailer and buy a little lorry. Does any of you know where i can find one? Ive searched loads of sites on the net and havent found too much.

I have a budget of £3000 so i know i wont get anything too flashy. I would like it with a living area and it has to be able to carry 1 or 2 16hh horses.

I dont mind how old it is as long as it is in good condition, does its job and looks half decent.

I think in all honesty you will struggle to find anything in that price range. The trouble is since the new licensing laws, everyone is looking for 3.5t boxes. There are boxes out there, but a lot of the cheaper ones do not have enough headroom for anything bigger than 15.2hh. Have a look on ebay (prob your best bet) but go and see anything before you bid - my friend bid on one advertised as being able to carry two 16.2hh and when she got it home it didn't have enough head room for her 15hh.

with a living area and enough room for 2 16.2 horses, you might find yourself over the weight limit. id try searching for a 5.5 ton.

as zoeshiloh said, new licensing laws means every ones after 3.5 tons so the prices have shot right up!

There have been some on horsmart for not too much (but then there may be a reason for this), I've been keeping eyes open for one however they seem to be few and far between at the moment!

I would drive with two in it, i say that so i know theres plenty of room for my boy who i think is a bit closteraphobic (sp?). Living has to only be small enough to sit down in.

i guess it depends on what lorry you get. one of these newer boxes made from aluminium or whatever thats lighter, you would but for 3k, you would probably be getting something slightly older and 'bulkier' if that makes any sence! lol

in all honesty im no expert on lorries, i just would have thought 2 horses + small living area and all the gear would come together at over 3.5 ton but maybe thats not the case. in which case i want one!

QR - i think you will be pushed to find a 3.5t lorry that can carry 2 horses plus living and still be within the weight limit.. i have a 3.5t VW lt, it is partitioned for 2, but i am pretty sure if i had 2 horses in it it would be overweight! you would probably be fine with 2 ponies tho.
it depends on the size of your neds as to what you will need!

I think that with 2 16h horses, fuel, driver & passenger, tack etc you will be well over weight.

With a budget of that amount I wouldn't even bother looking, assuming you actually find something at that price without a doubt you will be buying a pile of trouble. Sorry to say this but you need to carry on saving.

It's not impossible...but only for one horse

I have an A reg 3.5 ton old Bedford CF luton, OK she's not the most modern, fastest or best looking little lorry in the world, but she's solid and reliable and has given me no trouble at all over the last three years.

She carried my 15.3 mare no problem and has a small day living with sink, hob and seat and the luton for a small bed / storage.
She cost me £2,250 when I bought her and to be honest I'd be looking for at least the same if not more if I sold.

But as the others have said there is no way you could legally carry two.

QR: Thank you for all of your help guys.

Just to clear it up, i wouldnt carry two i only said room for two so i know there is plenty of space for my boy who doesnt like to be squished in too much. My post earlier said i would carry two, it was a typo and supposed to say wouldnt.

I know its not impossible to find them for that price and in good condition. Ive phone a couple over the last hour or so that seem promissing. Obviously i will go and view and make sure they are not complete heaps of crap.

We bought a vw lt35 horsemaster about 4 years ago for £1500 (out of horse and hound) but it needed work - new floor and other things, but it was a bargain!
However it takes 2 x 16.2HH easily masses of headroom. Side load, luton, cut through from cab to horses with sliding doors. Just a nice little lorry.
Anyway saw the identical lorry to ours advertised in horse and hound a few months ago and they sold it to first viewer for £5,250. So we did get a bargain!
The licensing has definitley pushed the prices up though.

Just keep your eyes peeled and you will probably soon find a bargain.
