Hi everyone,

This is my first post so please bear with me if I am not quite down with the lingo! (Its very confusing!)

I am thinking of putting a wanted ad either on H&H or Horsequest but wanted to find out if anybody else had had success using one, either buying/loaning or selling. There does seem to be a lot of wanted adverts at the moment and there is no indication of whether they are successful- I wonder if it will be a complete waste of time and money?!

I am looking for that all elusive schoolmaster/easy horse to event on loan wvtb... 14.2-15.2hh, age, sex etc immaterial. I need it to be sensible and easy as I will going to events with a client so it will need to stand on its own, be happy for me to be dealing with other horses and slot in happily etc...

Any feedback would be very much appreciated!

They do work - however you need to put what you are prepared to pay

Personally I usually discount LWVTB as timewasters, and won't let my horse out of my control without being paid first (same way if selling a car I wouldn't let them drive off before paying!)

I've had great success from a wanted ad - so many responses I actually stopped looking at sites. And I found my current boy through one.

But, very very few people would agree to LWVTB these days, especially for a horse as you have just descriped. I think it'd put people off.

Yes I think this will be the case unfortunately...

I just want something to have a nice fun season on before going back to youngsters as I have had a couple of years away from competing and horses. Now back grooming full time so would love a horse to get going with soon rather than waiting a few months especially as I have fab opportunities to train with great people etc.

Completely get what you are saying about the type of horse I am looking for- if I was looking for a youngster maybe I'd have more success as, theoretically at least, I would be increasing its value with the training and getting out competing.

My clients have offered me their horses to take out which is great but they are 16.3hh+ and I am 5'1 (on a good day) and very slight and I really struggle collecting and holding horses that size...Perhaps the short term solution is for me to suck it up and start throwing around some bales to build my muscles!

Thanks for input!

Should probably add that finance-wise I waiting for some inheritance to come through (mercenary I know, but aren't all horsey women?!) to pay for purchase of new horse so not a time waster...just impatient!

I have been looking at wanted ads as my horse is for sale. So far i haven't found anyone that sounds suitable with them. I wouldn't ntertain a lwvtb as i want the money in my hands before my horse goes out of my control. Hopefully sold him though today.

Fingers crossed you have! Has it taken a long time? The whole market seems pretty dreadful at the moment...

I think the answer to my query is I am going to have to stop being so impatient! And maybe keep window shopping until then!

Depends where you're advertising I think.

Back in the autumn I advertised a "loaner wanted" for my boy, and I was overwhelmed with the response. I just wasnt' at all organised - realise now should have been far more organised and done up a questionnaire etc, but I just didn't think anyone would be interested.

Tho' I guess a loan isn't like selling a horse, or placing a "wanted" advert. I've previously put up a "wanted" poster when I was looking for a horse, and was offered every fruit-loop mount in the county that would basically have hiked off with me as soon as I'd put a foot in the stirrup, these were horses IMO that were blatently dangerous and people didn't know what to do with them and were hoping that some numpty novice would come along and take them off their hands.

So be careful. Better by far IMO to trawl through adverts and pick out what you want, OR go to a dealer/agent you have been recommended and who you can trust implicity, or the tried and trusted routes of asking your instructor, friends etc to look around for you.

Was just a thought as looking through the websites there seems to be a lot of wanted ads.

As you say there it is inevitable that you will offered some fruit loops! I think having put this post up and reading the responses I am better to wait for a bit and if the meantime something comes up by word of mouth, great!

I have put the word about with local trainers, a few eventing friends and the pony club DC so hopefully something may come to fruition, be it something to loan or buy!

Thanks for comments everyone...

I have just sold my boy through seeing a WAnted advert on Horsequest, he met nearly all of his new owners criteria (just was a year younger) but she came to see him twice, loved him, vetted him and sold, all within 10 days, so yes they can work.
