Hi,
I am posting on bdhalf of my 11 year old daughter who is horse crazy. She was having an hour a week private riding lessons for abroubd 1 year but this is something i can no longer afford to keep up.

My daughter is looking for a yard that accepts labour from a child to include mucking out, grooming, tacking up, feeding, help with leading etc in exchange for a weekly lesson.

We are based in four oaks west midlands. Border of staffordshire. Areas we are looking for are surrounding including lichfield, cannock, walsall. Most considered.

Look forward to any replies, advice or pointing us in the right direction. Thank you.

I’m afraid you will probably struggle to find this, especially at the moment. Our insurance wouldn’t cover us for anyone under the age of 14, even when not in the midst of a pandemic.
As far as I recall it is also actually illegal to accept ‘labour’ from a minor in exchange for services.

Sadly, no yard are likely to offer this as your child is too young to be unsupervised doing yard work or employed doing them.
In the mad bad old days children used to be able to help at riding schools in return for a ride.
These days any yards insurance is not going to cover this.
Unfortunately whatever you do, it's going to cost money, even going down the route of pony sharing.
Can you save to allow a treat of a ride in each school holidays perhaps?

As others have said, you'll struggle to find something like this as it's technically child labour.

Gone are the days where you could help at a local stables in return for free rides.

I'd be surprised at anyone offering you an arrangement like this, much more so if a business but you may find someone privately willing to do this.

But if you do, please check that both you and they are insured for an arrangement of this type.

Things can, and do, go wrong very quickly and litigation is not cheap!
