WANTED Laminitic tiny pony as companion

I am posting on behalf of a friend who is looking for a life long companion for her pony. He has laminitis and is no longer allowed to graze in her paddocks. She has built a "sand pit" to turn him out on - BUT he is lonely! So she is looking for a buddy for him to be turned out with so that they can scratch and cuddle together!!!

So what she is looking for is:

Small Shetland, Fallabella or similar
Laminitic
Teenager
Mare or gelding
£ free

In return she can offer a knowledgable home with good facilities for laminitics.

She is the most caring horse owner I know, nothing is too much trouble and is married to a farrier, so the knowledge on dealing with laminitics is second to none. If anyone knows of anyone who is looking to re-home a pony that meets this criteria please pm me!!

Tell her to go to a sale and rescue one of those poor ponies going to the continent for meat!!! sure it wouldnt cost her much
 
So, let me get this right. Your friend wants a pony which has a (proven) potentially fatal condition... (2nd only to colic, in case you didn't know)


One which therefore could not be insured against laminitis..

I think It is great that she want another laminitic.

She has amazing facilities to care for a pony that would find it very difficult to find a suitable home. She already has one on a laminitic routine so it would be easy to have another in that same routine

some little pony is going to be very lucky

I think it's great she's specifically looking for a laminitic pony, these ponies often do lead a lonely life being kept off the grass in fat paddocks and keeping two laminitics will solve that. My lami pony has just been allowed out of fat camp to mingle with her mates for an hour and she's so much happier. I'd happily take on another lami as a companion for her if I could afford it. Good on your friend for doing this, I hope she finds a suitable friend for her pony :-)

Thanks for these lovely comments. They sum the sitation up well. She would have it in a sand area all the time it is turned out, it would be fed hay and Simple Systems feed suitable to laminitics and would be her beloved pony's companion. The idea being they share the sand pit and share a stable. I think she thinks it would be hard to put a pony under these circumstances if it was able to be on grazing and would end up feeling bad denying it a life on grass. As I say she is very experienced and could offer a super home to something deserving.
 
I too think it is wonderful, I don;t think I could deny a non-laminitc pony grass would feel mean so it makes sense to get another prone to laminitis.

I would suggest rather than looking on rescue websites actually ring your local horse charity - explain the situation - they may well have a pony that they don't feel they can re-home via web due to it being very very prone to laminitis but once they understand the situation they may have just the little person.

Good on your friend, clearly a well thought out decision. I am another who thinks it is better to have a lami pony on no grass instead of a non-lami not having grass.

Just because it's not a decision some of you guys would make, doesn't make it wrong.....
 
I don't think it's a problem, if a lami pony needs a home, and she can provide the facilities to provide the correct care for said pony, why not? Good luck to her :)

Have you tried the Essex horse and pony protection society? I have a 18 yr old welsh a on foster from them who is a lami. In fact I am thinking of giving him back as he is slightly problematic in that he has to be managed for lami when my mare doesn't but if they are separated he gets stressed and he would be happier back in their environment. Not great when I ride my mare out or try and keep him off the grass but turn her out. He is the gentlest easiest chap you can meet apart from his separation anxiety but sounds like he would be perfect for your friend. If your friend is interested she can pm me and I would most definitely go back to ehpps to foster another ponynthat wouldbe more suited to our circumstances.

Wow, just a bit patronising... Obviously the woman who has gone to all this trouble is just some idiot novice without a clue what lami is :rolleyes:

I think its a lovely thing to do, this lady obviously cares very much for her little pony, i dont know many people who would go to such lengths. Good luck to her and her search. One pony is going to find itself very happy.
 
Horses that have ended up with welfare charities can have had lami in the past due to their mistreatment before they were rescued. These horses and ponies can need special homes, and if someone has the facilities to take one on, great!

One I knew myself was (and I'm sure still is) a lovely horse, that I would have happily taken home, but I was worried about being able to meet her special needs, caused by the some neglectful sod in her past. The person who did take her will have got a very special horse indeed.:)

Thanks Jericho. I will let her know. I think she wants a tiny as it will have to share a stable at night, but they may well have others that suit her size requirement!
 
A little update for you all

Friend has today collected a lovely little mare who was going to be PTS as owner was not coping with her illness. She is gorgeous and coped well with being transported 6 hours with a stop half way at a service station to swap from horse transporter to friend's trailer.

She has a lovely home for life so a lovely end to a sad story.

That's fantastic, so pleased you're friend has given this pony a second chance...
Having got a pony with Cushings and prone to being footy, I know how difficult it can be. Although mine is able to go out for 6 hours a day with a muzzle 98% of the time. Thankyou for posting the update
 
im not sure where you are,but there are quite a few ponies for companions at belwade farm in scotland if you look on the world horse welfare site:)
 
I was only telling OH about your friends lovely idea yesterday. He reckoned it was a great thing too.

Hopefully they will have lovely happy long lives together.

I agree. Why these posts knocking her for wanting to offer a pony that may otherwise be suffering or PTS because its owner doesn't have the time or facilities to deal with the condition, or one that may also be lonely due to being kept off the grazing? No matter what you ask for on here, you always get critisism. It's not a discussion thread where someone has asked for advice, it's a request for a pony that has obviously been well thought through.

Brilliant. That's fantastic news! I hope the introductions go well and the little mare settles in. What a lucky girl she is. :):)

what a wonderful kind thing to do and to save the little mare from being PTS is fantastic news.
I am so happy this little mare has a new lease of life in a great knowledgeable home.

This is a prime example of my other post on another thread. Someone post a help me post and some jump on the OP and criticize what she said. What a lovely end to the story :)
