Hi guys
I'm new here so I'll do a quick intro :) I have a beautiful 14.2hh 12 year old arab x welsh mare who is my happy hacker/showjumper and i'm from ware hertfordshire.
Im hoping to move my pony down to ware very soon (just trying to locate a space in a yard or grazing somewhere)
So ive been looking into finding a farrier in the area i tried the farrier.gov website and emailed a few and i was dissapointed to find they all charge between £65/£70 as i havevn't had lexi for a while (she's been on loan while i sorted a few things out) i must of missed the increase in price! Last time i checked it was £50/£55
So i was wondering if anyone knew of a farrier who charges this much for a full set of shoes? I don't want to sacrifice quality for price but £70 is pushing my budget a bit
Hope you can help!
P.s I am also currently looking on behalf of my uncle to buy a Welsh D or Cob Type horse between 14.2/16.2hh for me to ride during the week and my uncle to ride on weekends just as a happy hacker would prefer under 10 and priced under £1000 Sorry for the essay thanks!

Sorry but I can't give you any recommendations. I just wanted to say that I think you may have to face paying more than you want. With the increase in material costs, insurances, diesel, etc, etc, etc, any farrier charging £50/55 a set is going to have to shoe an awful lot of horses a day in order to make ends meet, which means quality is likely to be compromised.

I can't help with a recommendation as mine no longer lives in Herts and just comes to do a few existing clients but £65 is about average for a full set of standard shoes round here. £40 for a half set and trim. I would wonder why someone was charging less than everyone else does in an area.

I was paying £60 for a full set over 3 years ago. For fronts and back trim, I'm now paying £42.50. I'd say that's cheap. I'm the other end of Herts so can't help, but you need to realise that's how much it costs.

im in herts and use Trevor Johnson. Ive never had any problems and he is reliable and charges ok.His on the farrier database website.

OP, I think £60 is about average for a set of shoes these days.
I use Trevor too :) he's great.

I hope you got a discount on the rent Sarah, you could pay for three DIY places with what it was advertised at.

You are still going to struggle to find a safe happy hacker with no issues for under £1000 even in the current economic climate.
