I am considering putting my TB mare on full loan for the summer. This is because I am doing an MSc and will be doing my dissertation fieldwork and cannot take her with me. And probably could not afford to pay for her whilst I do this. Have any of you done this? Are there many people who look for summer only loans?

Just by way of a bit more info. She would have to stay on her current yard which is 24 hour turnout in the summer, so fairly low maintenance and cost. She is not a novice ride, cannot hack out alone and is a rescue ex-racer so not the easiest horse in the world. Having said that, when out at grass she is pretty laid back. She has never competed and is better with a fairly low impact life.

Would be great to know what people think.

Weeeeell tbh I am possibly looking for a summer loan myself as my mare will be in foal but yours would not be something I would not look at even if I adapted my plans significantly. Not meaning to be negative about your horse however you are essentially looking for someone to take on something that can't really do much than be a companion hack.

I think you may find it difficult to find a good loan home if you want loaner to take on all costs as since I mentioned possibly wanting something people are pointing out to me adverts of seemingly quite straight forward rides.

Good luck all the same and perhaps start talking about her now or maybe finding a sharer now who may take on a bit more in the summer and will know her by then.

I think being summer you could well find someone.
But the not hacking alone would mean you would need to introduce them to a few nice people to ride with.

Do you have an arena?
If so you may find someone that doesn't hack much.

Other option is find a shared now.
Getting them to take over full time when you are away them back to sharing after.
Horse will be out so would be fairly low maintenance.

Hiya I think there are a lot of peeps wanting summer only loans as they just can't be arsed in the winter!!

If there's someone they can hack out with regularly then I'm sure you will find someone, I prefer to hack out in company than alone.

My only bit of advice would be to massively vet the person looking after your horse. However, if said horse is staying on your current yard there will be friends that can keep an eye on her, good luck xxx

The first horse I loaned would not hack out alone and to be honest it was a bit of a pain as I always had to time when I went up so I could ride with other people. It didn't work that well for me personally but that is not to say there would not be plenty of people that would be happy with this situation.

i would be interested in a short term loan IF i was paying all the costs BUT it would have to be a pretty easy horse.
for example , i enjoy hacking out on my own just as much as i do company. If the horse wouldnt or was dangerous to hack alone that would put me off significantly.

as another poster asked, what other facilities does your yard have?
if a you a good arena and jumping facilities that would increase the riding options for your potential loanee.

I put my lad on loan this summer as I was moving to Italy for the summer and wanted him to carry on with his work.

I had loads of interest as people got a lovely well schooled pony for the 'nice' weather then could hand him back when it got krap again.

Sadly I picked the wrong home and he came home underweight and awful to ride after being socked in the teeth and over bitted. All I say is make sure you vet the home thoroughly an check up as often as you can. Don't let this put you off though, I'm sure there are 100s of people who would have looked after him, I just didn't check out his new home well enough.

I loaned out one of my hunters for the summer a couple of years ago and it worked out really well.

I advertised him on the hunt and RC websites, and as was well known in both, had several people interested. so was in the nice position of choosing who he went too.

However he was a bombproof hack and the loaner was allowed to do some low level competitions and fun rides, so he had a lot to offer.

The possible issue with your mare is that most summer loaners will be looking for a 'happy hacker' to meander around the countryside, so she may not fit into that category, but still worth a try.

If you couldn't loan her, how about finding grass livery and turning her away for that period?

Good luck with your studies.

I am currently looking for a horse to loan over the summer - May to the end of September. Not because I don't want any of the winter jobs, but because I'm at university the rest of the year and really don't have the time or money to keep a horse.

Think there are probably many students like me looking for horses over the summer so imagine you won't find it that difficult as long as there are decent facilities at the yard you're at. Biggest problem for me is finding something that's close enough for me to get to!

Definitely make sure you check out whoever you're planning on loaning to though - had a friend whose TB went away for 2 months and came back in terrible condition, though I suppose this wouldn't be as much of a problem if your horse is kept at the same yard and you're able to check on it now and again.

Good luck finding someone!

Given that the horse has to stay where it is, cant hack alone and doesnt sound like you want someone doing a lot of schooling/jumping with it, your best hope really is that someone on your current yard has a horseless friend who is competent enough. Otherwise I think you might struggle.
I'm considering looking for a one season loan next year, but with the specific purpose of giving my youngster some confidence on the roads, so something like your mare wouldn't be suitable. As she doesn't seem to be much of a confidence giver (for people or other horses) I think your market is severely limited. If you can think of a solution to the limitation of use problem above, someone out of uni for the summer is probably your best bet.
