War Horse - Stage v screen? Anyone seen both?

I'm not sure! I like them both in their own ways.

Movie: I liked seeing Joey as a real horse(s?). I LOVED the charge and the no-mans-land bit was epic.
I didn't like the weird orange filter, I didn't like the fact they didn't speak German, I thought the gun pulling bit could have been more distressing.

Play: The gun pulling bit was amazing! Those skeletal ghost like horses were fantastic. The puppets were so creative and I often forgot I was looking at puppets. I also liked the part where he jumped the tank.
I don't know if it's because I'm not a huge fan of plays, but I often found the way they spoke a bit annoying, perhaps a little forced?

Film was utter ****; the play on the other hand I still cannot in almost a year put into words how good it is! :D

I saw the stage show in August last year and the film last week and have to say I loved both but for very different reasons. Also read the book.

The puppets in the stage show were out of this world. You get used to them as the show goes on and by the end you completely forget that there is a person in there. They make them look so full of character- even down to a swish of the tail or flick of the ear.

With the film, I loved the history and it gave you a real view of the shear number of horses that were involved in the first world war. There's one scene where you see them all galloping together and you just think wow, how amazing to think that you can train a horse to gallop into battle in that way when most of us have a problem stopping them galloping away from a plastic bag on the floor!!! Makes you feel inadequate as a rider haha. But the horses didn't have as much character or presence. I also didn't feel like there was as much as a bond between Albert and Joey - but then again thats a bit hard to do with a real horse.

I liked how the film followed the book more. I'd actually say the stage show and film were quite different story wise.

The characters in all 3 stayed pretty much the same which I liked. Although I wasn't too sure about the acting in the film at some points.

BUT if I was to chose, it would be the stage show every time. There's just something magical about it, and its so original as well. Well worth going to see.

The film is pretty much the same as any sappy horsey film - black beauty, sea biscuit etc.
