Warm or Cold Water

If its just a quick wipe over when I finish riding then I just use the cold water on the yard. If my tacks very dirty I reluctantly trundle over to the house to get some hot water, I'm not keen on cleaning tack!

I wash it off with slightly warm water and soap, then apply saddle soap with hardly damp sponge.

I have never washed my tack off, I rinse my bit after every ride, but i either clean my tack every time I use it, which drives the other half mad or leave it for a couple of weeks which then drives me mad.

hot water to remove the grease then I use leather conditioner as and when it is required - I do not use saddle soap.

gingerwitch do you wash your tack off before applying saddle soap?

Hi Wheels, not really,I only use saddle soap on my brown tack, and I suppose its what you mean by wash, I wet my sponge and wipe it over, then rinse the sponge then use saddle soap, i use oil once a quarter, but if i have black tack I don't use saddle soap at all, as I was told by my saddler that it can cause the colour to change over time - not sure if this is true but have not chanced it.

I just realised that one of my bridles I still use for every day is over 20 years old, and it was second hand off my yard owner at that time, as we struggled to fit the horses ears that i had at that time.
