Warm up etiquette rant

[ QUOTE ]
Then there are the idiots that go into canter 3 strides behind you and expect you to get out of thier way with no warning.

[/ QUOTE ]
Oh yes, and the ones who go from canter to walk infront of you, normally when there's someone coming the other way so its difficult for you not to almost crash into them! x

All the usuals annoy me i.e. no left to left, walking on the track, having a chat in 2s/3s, stopping dead in front of you, not looking around, parking, trainers in the ring etc. Whips get me too - sometimes almost literally!: I was working in yesterday and just as I got parallel to a woman who'd parked on the track she leant over to the outside and thus stuck her whip upwards - wouldn't have been so bad had i not been on a pony but she nearly had my eye out!

Also when you have a just a general HUGE area to warm up in at shows why do people join my circle?

If their horse likes company then warm up near me not on top of me!

AGREE AGREE a million times with everything everyone on here has said - pity we do not all live in the same area and then working in would be WONDERFUL. 2 things happened i saw on Sat - fences whacked up way above hieght being jumped in SJ rings and people chatting on the walkways, blocking the way and NOT moving even though politely asked by rider who had to stand and wait (well, until i shouted!) GRRRRRRR

I just tell everyone he kicks - visciously - no-one rides up my *rse then!!

And while we're on the subject what about people walking the course at xcountry or hunter trials (not riders usually, more likely to be random spectators)

Have been a fence judge at our local one for years and the amount of times you have to shout 'course please' and they look at you blankly - then louder & finally 'get off the f*cking course you idiot' usally gets a really dirty look but they do shift when they see a 17hh horse bearing down on them at top speed

Oh yes, I agree about random people not even dressed for riding strolling round the xc course like they're having a Sunday afternoon walk in the park when I'm trying to jump. And why do they always have mega spooky golf umbrellas & yappy dogs on dangerously long leads or loose? It's a hunter trial, not a police horse exam!!

I am glad I am not the only one that gets irate with people's warming up ability I tend to find I sepnd the whole time worrying where someone else is going to be going. I hate it when people cut you up and then do not apologise. Yes sometimes we all cut people up by accident and I will always apologise. What really annoys is if you have a sharp/ lively horse that your having problems sticking to and people still keep coming towards you. My old horse used to manage to clear the warm up with his antics though - so guess that was a blessing

I am the only person I have ever heard in this country shout "Jumping Upright" etc - I do not understand why people do not do it over here

I do it if there is someone in the way

I get really frustrated when working in for dressage as well - LEFT TO LEFT!!!! It's not flippin rocket science!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

And dont forget the NO WALKING ON THE OUTSIDE TRACK!

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh the amount of SJers that think it is acceptable

In defence of SJ'ers though, it can make sense to walk on the outside track

If horses are trying to turn into fences then there is nothing more annoying than having people ambling along on the inside getting in the way

Bottom line is, get out of the smaller classes a.s.a.p and the warm-up tends to get a lot 'bigger' when the fences go up lol!

YES! The schooling whip thing drives me mad! Ever since got mown down by an enormous lump of horse once, my lad is quite spooky when people hurtle towards him, and jumps a mile if their whips catch him!
It is so annoying!!

Actualy, our RC has now ceated a sign that we display at all events reminding people of the rules!! All of us felt it was just getting SO annoying, and having the sign there means that anyone on collecting ring duty can refer any persistant offenders to the big noticeboard!! It does seem to have helped so far, just things like no more than 8 competitors in the warm up, this must e next 8 to jump, left to left, don't put jumps up above max height for the class etc etc!

My pet hate is those warm up arenas with limited space and therefore only allow a certain number of people in at any time. Not a problem as such but you I get really annoyed with the people who are not due to be jumping for a while and are ambling round there or worst still one of the liveries who's not even competing - just having a play. Makes me want to drag them out by the tail!

I was competing away for the first time in a long time yesterday and I was utterly appalled at the lack of awareness, courtesy and etiquette in the warm up. I counted 14 horses warming up at one time in a 20x40 with two fences up. There were regularly people almost crashing, no-one shouting when they were coming into a fence, no-one passing left to left- merely grimly glaring at me for trying to avoid them by observing this rule. People routinely shot up our backside and my pony had the wind up him as it was.

Thing things that annoyed me the most had to be the people who brought their trainer in who then proceeded to whack the fence up to 3ft3 plus oxers when we were doing a 2ft6 'novice' class, without so much as checking with anyone else if they minded. (this whilst 10 other people were warming up)
Thankfully there was a lull and only 4 of us warming up and I was lucky enough to have an extremely courteous and polite lady in with me who shouted every time she was within 10 feet of me letting me know she was cantering by or doing a jump. I have to say she really made up for all the people having near misses!

I went somewhere I don't usually go a while back, and they had 17 people warming up at one point in a 40 x 30 school, and didn't let anyone know that somehow they had got 1hr behind on the times, so more and moer were piling in and we were in there for 1hr 20 in the end....they just didn't keep people up to date on what was happening at all! Needless to say our test was pretty dreadful!

I hate people that don't p[ass left to left, its really not that difficult! I still have a bruise on my knee from getting squashed against a fence when someone rode into me a month ago!
What irritates me even more is when people stand around in a group chatting! At one show there were about 5 girls taking up nearly half the warm up area just gossiping. And people who go round and round trying to make a horse jump when its clearly having none of it and they're giving it all the wrong signals!

Hehe, glad I'm not the only one who has the odd rant in the warm up!

I hate the instructors who plant themselves in the middle of the warm up and give a lesson - been known to complain officially about that one!

Mind you, I made someone so embarressed they left the warm up once. We were both coming into a corner in trot from opposite directions, we passed correctly left to left and then the silly cow did a very tight change of rein and put her horse's nose up my mare's backside!! Mare was not best pleased to put it politely and the other horse was lucky it didn't get two hooves in its face! I made my feelings very clear on the matter and the other rider slinked off out of the arena.

I'm another shouter... yet they still walk across the jump when i'm one stride away.... ONE STRIDE ffs.

OR they stare at you blankly and stop the other side of the jump 3 strides out to watch and will not move.

then you get the ones who just gallop round and round on the inside track so whenever you get round to approach the jump their always there in the way.

Totally agree with Law,
I too was at the same show and it was scary going into the warm up arena, noone seemed to know left to left and people were coming in all directions, i was jumping at the start (13th to jump) and most of the riders werent riding for ages,
it was a free for all.
