Warm up etiquette....

have once again today had a bad and annoying warm up experience!

went to a local unaffilialted show today, showjumping just to take my four year old too and had people using her a*se to stop!! Jumping fences the wrong way, screaming at their horses not knowing their left to left!!

How do we stop it!!!!

Hope this doesnt sound snobby as unaffialiated is a great start to young eventers, but i will definetly not be taking her again I will wait and go to Norton Heath affialiated as I know this will not happen, But I really wish it wasnt like this as this particular EC is ten mins away from me!!!!!
 
I have to say i agree in most cases. I luckily have two local riding clubs which are Fab but i have been to ones which i will never go again!
Sadly i am to old to affiliate my pony so i can only do local shows

What basic area are you in? are you near Leicestershire?
 
I witness this at all unaff sj events iv ever been to and it p*sses me off a treat!! Today there were people jumping the same fence from both directions and nearly crashing!!And people putting the jumps up twice the size of the class so i couldnt warm up properly on my v v green horse i was being paid to ride. ridiculous!
 
Such a shame but looks like I will have to go affiliated at Norton Heath with her as I dont get people flying up her back side!!!

I am based in essex 40mins from Norton Heath.
 
I think its one of those things you cannot really avoid. I have found in the past, if you just correct people they are quite embarrassed as they just don't understand what they are doing wrong. I often take horses to compete for the first time, I put green ribbon on there tails, people know what it means and it does make people stay out of your way.
 
I do shout trust me!!! Cant stand it, and people that just gather and chat right in the way whilst you are trying to warm up!!

Luckily Spider was impeccible behaved considering, infact better behaved then most of the horses that were probably twice her age!!!
 
Well it is actually Longwood im talking about! LOL!!

It was manic about 40 people in the warm up! And the school was waterlogged and about 3ft deep!!! It was hideous!!

The last class I did was the Novice class 3 and I got home at 3.30pm!!!
 
Really!!! Wish it had of been dead today!

Yes NH it is think they have a affiliated weekend in December, will have to have a look, I think she is ready for a British Novice.

Wanted to do the Intermediate today but I think they are still jumping now!!!

I was told by my trainer that if you have a nice horse avoid unaffiliated sj like the plague. Have to say i agree as all my experiences unaff have been horrendous.
 
i went to an unnaff show on thursday evening and the collecting ring was fairly packed, the class was only 2"9ft so we where all happily warming up over 2"9ft fences and then someone gallops their horse into the collecting ring and gets their mum to shove the fences up to 3"6ft, which she knocked down several times, and which also prevented everyone in the collecting ring jumping as they didnt want to jump that big, and i had 2 horses to go before i was in and i couldnt even jump because this one girl was shoving the fences up! and my mum asked if she could put them down abit but she said "no, my daughter is jumping them at the moment!" i was like

think i will stick to BSJA next time!
 
Glad I am not the only one who shouts in the collecting ring, sorrr ought to rephrase it as loudly asks people to move out of the way! Why do people have to walk around two abreast blocking the practice fence?
 
I LOATHE poor collecting ring etiquette, why cant everyone be curteous (sp) and take notice of others around them, there should be rules for affil and unaff collecting rings. I hate having someone cut me up hen im warming up or jumping.
 
I've found BSJA can be just as bad about jumping excessively big in the warm-up for the size of the class! People showing that there horse can jump 4ft parallels in the warm up is not needed for a british novice class and deprives everyone else of the practice fence . Admittedly though the etiquette is often better at BSJA but I still find BSJA at longwood is still hard going so if you think unaffiliated is even worse there I will personally avoid it like the plague!
 
I find that, in my area at least, PC open competitions are generally better than other unaffiliated SJ as regards collecting ring organisation, collecting ring etiquette and general politeness...

When I was at college (equine) if there was a comp on, we used to steward the collection ring.
If any one broke the 'rules' we would call them aside, or just shout at them, to pass left to left, jump with red on the right, stop standing in the doorway etc.
A big group stopped in the doorway once, stopping a red ribboned horse coming out to get to her class. Rider asked if they could move, they ignored her, so I shouted, 'get out the way, theres a horse trying to get out', they stared at me like I was speaking french! I shouted 'NOW' and they, grumbling, did move to then stop in the middle to talk instead. Grrrrrr.

Ive had the exact same experience BSJA, when i have only wanted to jump at max. a 1m parallel for a BN jump off and it the fence is already well on its way to a 1.10m parallel but with such a large spread on it i could have nicely fitted a horse and a half in the middle of it!!!!!!

It doesnt put me off going but it does irritate me. It why i quite like the BE tape on the wings rule where the fence can go no higher than the tape is set for that class.

Also the left to left rule is fantastic when everyone uses it, but i hate it when i try to abide by the etiquette of the warm up ring, then someone who clearly has no idea continues to take the left to left thing into their own hands and then looks at you as if you are an imbecile when they crash into you

i went out on the weekend BD and there was one woman in the warmup whos horse was obviously young and not anywhere near ready to compete yet - every time someone went even within 10 strides of her she started screaming at them to stay away from her............

Came within a whisker of getting dropped by my baby horse last time out unaffiliated when someone jumped the practice fence the wrong way and crashed into me. Have to admit my response to her was none too polite (once I had climbed back up off the side of his neck where I was hanging on).

The part that really annoyed me was that baby had been behaving perfectly up to that point and then decided to have a panic every time a horse came towards him.

Haven't been out with him since (next trip next weekend) - will be SO cross if he has developed a problem with collecting rings!!

I know what you mean about BSJA too - can never believe how high people jump in the collecting ring to prepare for a BN class at a mighty 90cms!! Does it really make them jump better in the ring? I would be more worried about p*****g Lexi off right before I went in!! (but then she can be a bit of a funny old thing).
 
I believe there is a max warm up height (class dependant) in BSJA just as there is in BE. Carries the same penalty of elimination from class. Will find relevant rule.
Being a sad puppy I spent yesterday reading rule book before our first outing this week.
 
You are right, I read that rule too (same height as the 1st round of the class I believe). Doesn't seem to make any difference whatsoever to the people in the collecting ring and being a 'newbie' to the whole BSJA thing I didn't really feel like being the one to complain.

There is a rule in BSJA that the practice fence must never exceed the maximum height of the fences in the class currently running......but no-one ever enforces it. I was warming up for a BN on sunday and had to wait while a well-known (in the area) trainer / coursebuilder changed the practice oxer to an upright of 1.20m

I can sort of understand wanting to jump 10cm higher (i.e the potential height of the JO), but any more than that is just being selfish imo

the collecting/warm-up ring and the hideously tedious waiting around is what stops me from doing unaffiliated jumping!

I am terrified of the people who insist on turning-up with problem horses that buck and leap about in the confined space - at least bsja-ers are covered with 3rd party insurance. My horse hates it too and it always seems to be really difficult to warm up properly on both reins - at Duckhurst there's sometimes 15 horses trotting, cantering and jumping all in the same direction in a 20x40 arena.

Think that's why I converted to eventing - times for all phases and there are rarely more than half dozen other competitors working-in.
 
I know how you feel holly. I would consider putting a red ribbon in her tail to keep people away, not because she kicks or anything!! I quite often do that when I take babies out, it certainly helps!!!
 
I was at an unaffiliated sj comp yesterday and it was run by the University riding club. There were about 30 horses there waiting to take part in various classes and a limit of 6 people to warm up in the collecting ring. The gate was manned and people had to wait in line to get in. The fences were one small 1ft'8 or so and the other 2ft3 (the class that was on was 2ft3). After this class the fence went up and someone warming up put it up way high like 3ft when the class was 2ft6. It rained and got cold so the collecting ring got quiet and there were three of us in there. I asked if I could put the fence down a hole and put the tiny one up to 2ft3 and they other two people were relieved that I had asked as they wanted it changed too.

sorry for the long winded reply but I think having the collecting ring manned is a good idea but the problems arise when a lot of people are waiting to get in and warmup. The waiting area gets congested and dangerous. You can't win really
