Warm up nightmare - School Rules?!

Having been involved in a warm-up crash at a BSJA show at the weekend, I am left wondering,

*Why does nobody know theire school rules anymore?!*

Seriously, I am AMAZED at the shocking and dangerous riding that goes on in the warm-up these days. No-one seems to know the school rules, nor how to ride when there are others riding in the same arena as you. This was a BSJA show so I would hope that this level of rider has a bit more experience and knowledge, but they are worse than the unafilliated riders!!

Some girl crashed into me because she didn't go left-left, people were riding in fron of the jump as we were literally mid-air, people were standing their (unmounted) horses on the track, and people were just wandering into the arena without looking who was coming down the track. My poor old horse didn't know what was going on, and ended up being pulled around as I tried in vain to avoid people who werent looking!

Anyone got any thoughts, views, similar stories or just wish to join the rant?!!!

Standard school rules dont really work for SJ warmup.
ie, walk on inside track hinders turning in to fence. Much better if peeps walk on outside track. Left to left works OK if just going round track but again, not good to help turning in to fence.

What does annoy the pants off me is when approaching another rider and its obvious we are well clear of each other when they suddenly swerve to obey the left to left rule causing havoc.

I think it would be better to say use common sense and only apply left to left if collision is likely.

I think people need some more common sense TBH and need to actually LOOK around them! I know everyone amkes mistakes sometimes but they usually say sorry and you dont mind. I find people are much better once you get Newcomers+, I guess they have had more practise
But I find warming up for bn and discovery a nightmare on a youngster, people seem to it as ok to cut you up, use your horse as a stopping aid by ramming into it, or walking right behind it and then having the cheek to get annoyed when the horse reacts in some way! so i generally wait til the class is nearly over or warm up while everyones walking if i have a sharp baby horse, saves alot of hassle.

My last awful time in a warm up occured at a local RC event:

Those that know NH indoor warm up know how tight it is and no-one was announcing when they jumped dispite there being about 8 horses in there leading to many near misses and when I called out to say I was jumping someone still insisted on walking across the front of the fence, hence me calling out again more loudly (and slightly snottily

) so she scarpered out of the way.

I also had some numpty on a big 17hh hunter type (sorry if you know him but he was

) who couldn't control his horse and kept using my horse's back-end as a battering ram because he figured out he didn't kick

We have to take an exam to compete affiliated so in these classes the warm up is usually quite civilised. Unfortunately, they start at 1 metre and I am not brave enough (or patient enough) to take my youngster straight out at that height so I have been doing some training classes at 60, 80 and 90cm.

The warm ups are a nightmare. Lots of people with limited manners and/ or limited control. The last one was the worst. It was an open competition and there were lots of inexperienced riders and lots of young horses - what a combination

Even my mare, who is very laid back at shows (not at home sadly!!) had a jump and a skip.

And why oh why are we supposed to use the inside track for walking in the showjumping warm up? It makes no sense and yet it is in the rules and people shout at you if you deviate.

I don't do showjumping but in showing it sounds just as bad! Especially little girls on their show ponies who think everyone should get out of their way (and in showing left to left in warm up should occur.... no excuse! no jump, no obstacles nothing!) yet they insist that they require the outside track, or people who just think they are gods gift and we should be honoured they are at the same show! its like my horse is >17hh! If we are going to collide, you will come off worse! now GO LEFT TO LEFT!!!!!! GRRR and then they tell YOU off if you havn't moved!
argh!
ahh that was a nice little rant

Must admit I am not the brightest in the warm up but few years back jumping at a decent show, always used to be on my own so jumped whatever was up and ready to jump, going into a decent parallel when some numpty moves in between the wings to start putting the poles up. I jumped it with them standing in between the poles. They had not a clue as to what was going on and that there was a horse actually committed to the fence, were just intent on talking to the person they were with!

went to an unaff sj sunday and there were a group of little kids on ponies and there mums wandering around chatting and taking pictures of their ponies and rosettes about 2 strides away from the jumps......grrrrrr

I hate indoor SJ, it scares the pants of me!!!
Have been galloped into on a 4YO and it scared this horse stupid, couldn't go near other horses for about 2 years but thankfully is much better now.
And unfortunately I have a baby which needs to go out again soon so dreading it
