Went to a well known show centre today, and was only allowed to warm up on one rein! Changed the rein to try and do some work on the other and got told to go round the same way as everyone else! Does this annoy anyone else or is it just me?

hummm the only time this happened to me was at a morning warm up session in the scope festivals main ring. but fair enough as there were hundreds in there and someone would call out a change of reign every 5mins or so.
although i'd rather just be left to it, it doesn't bother me too much as long as there are regular joint changes of reign.

Was it an official who said that? I'd have told them to bugger off. You cant warm up on one rein!

Yes it was an official, was not impressed

It wasn't BSJA, was just an unaffil, but still would have liked them to change the rein at least once while I was in there!

The jumps were both off the left rein too!!

If warm ups are so busy that they have to only allow one rein, then they should limit the amount of people warming up! Just need someone on the gate and have a certain number of people in at once (ie. the next 8 for example). If they can do it at the odd PC thing Ive seen then I dont see why they cant at BSJA / unaff. SJ.

They kept saying only the next 10 to warm up but no-one was listening to them, oh well my boy jumped nicely anyway and was pleased with him

Just wondered if it was only my local show centre that did this or whether it was in other places as well, but sounds like it's not just my centre

In all my years competing (very many!) I have never come across any jumping show venue that goes on anything other than the left rein, as T_E said teach your horse to go in counterflexion if you are really concerned, but TBH its not something I am that worried about. A really good argument for one rein warm up is when you try the working in at our local unaff dressage comps, some people are just downright dangerous!

Ive never come across it in my area that's for sure. Must simply depend on where you are! If they weren't listening with regards to only 10 people being in the ring then I would have just ignored their left-rein only rule as well! You cant say one rule and then let another not be stuck to.

That is what happens at HOYS. You get around 80 odd horses and ponies all going round the same way in various paces, then the steward shouts change rein, and we all go round the other way. It is not too bad unless the Kings Troop or other regiment are there, as they go around in a big bundle and it is hard not to either run them over or get run over by them.

Think I know where you were

. Tbh, it annoys me more if a warm up is busy when people do warm up on the "wrong" rein, as this is when accidents happen. In a small arena there simply isn't room for one person walking on the outside track, one trotting or cantering inside them, then somebody else hurtling towrds you the other way! I think that''s why william got so scared about warming up in confined areas. It is all very well changing rein every 5 minutes when fences aren't involved, but it would be rather complicated to switch the direction of the warm-up jumps every five minutes too.

Got really REALLY CROSS yesterday with people flipping walking on the track chatting, not passing left to left, & then as I approached the practice jump some woman steps in front of my pony & started adjusting it, as I politely pointed out that I had been about to jump, she informed me that her daughter needed it up, oh thats ok then, couldn't I have jumped it just once??? Some people aaaghhh!!!

If people are walking they should be on the outside track (at jumping shows, not for dressage), but obviously not abreast which is what you're referring to I guess? That is very infuriating. If you're going to jump I find using a very loud clear voice saing "OXER" or "UPRIGHT" in a tone that brooks no discussion usually works!

kizzywiz - this is a MAJOR issue I have with warm up. Especially with BSJA people! They come in with their "groom" and proceed to hog the practice fences! Their "person" jumps the fence and immediately they walk out to adjust it, sod looking around to see other riders approaching it! and just generally sod ANYBODY else who happens to be warming up too. It drives me absolutely insane. I yelled at 2 people yesterday for it, I just yell "excuse me, Im jumping that!".

tigers-eye, Ive always been told that walkers should be on the INSIDE track?!!

This is such a pain, I have lots of sympathy. Was competing at bsja on saturday and nearly ran a man over who was adjusting a riders tack on the track next to a fence. When I came onto the inner track to avoid both fence and rider, he just stepped out in front of me without looking and thankfully I was in trot and my horse just stopped dead when I asked him. Then he looked at me like I was odd! Grr! My show before that was right rein only with no changes of rein either. A total pain, not to mention the uncontrollable stallions that were rearing and striking out and the fact that most sj'ers don't seem to be able to control a horse's quarters!

I thought walkers should be on the inner track too, regardless of jumping or dressage. Will definately try to be stricter about getting to do the practice fence, though its really hard as mostly I don't have anyone to help me, so sometimes end up like yesterday doing one cross pole in a crap trot!! Oh & by the way, if my class was 70cm, why was the bloody practice fence wacked up to about 90cm!!! We're training over this height but not ready to compete, or be jumping this without some help & when its safe. If people are whizzing over this, why are they in the 70cm class?? Sorry, feel better now!!

I was always taught outside track for walking when warming up for jumping (which is the opposite to dressage/normal school rules) because those jumping can have a problem turning to a fence if they are on the outside track and there are walkers on the inside track.

That makes sense actually, however, as someone mentioned earlier, I guess this doesn't apply to walking two abreast chatting to your mate!

Not really bothered about only warming up on one rein as Jig seems to jump nicely anyway once we're in the ring but has been interesting to read other people's views on it
