Warm Waterproof Winter Coat - cheap but doesnt leak!

Hi guys

I know its the wrong time of year as we are hopefully coming into summer soon but does anyone recommend a really warm winter waterproof coat that doesnt leak?

I bought a coat made by a well known brand for £180 in December after being assured it was warm and wouldnt leak and sadly it leaked after only wearing it for a few months and I had kept it for best so it had hardly been worn! :(

I have therefore been put off of these expensive coats as it seems the cheaper ones are just as good!

I am looking for one around £60-£80. Does anyone have any recommendations?

The warmest, most waterproof coat I ever had was a Regatta from an on-line workwear suppliers - it was about £35. It was not a thing of beauty, but it did the job. Workwear is always cheaper than anything labeled "Horse". If you are tiny you can get ladies / extra small sizes if you look around. You can always phone the company for measurements if you are unsure.
 
funnily enough one of the best i ever had was a regatta too. cost me about 15 quid and lasted several seasons. stayed waterproof but zip gave way.

i bought a brand new musto several years ago that leaked like a seive from day1.

but remember whatever you buy don't add conditioner to the rinse. guaranteed to leak if you do that....
 
One of my best coats was a Just Toggs bought in a sale. It stayed warm and waterproof for about five years!

Now I have gone back to an old fashioned Barbour (the old fashioned wax type) and just add layers underneath which does the job.

I find the expensive jackets get dirty too quickly and then don't seem to stay waterproof after too much washing, even when using the proper products.
 
Look at Bronte coats, you can get them most places and at those large stalls like Yorkshire Trading at shows. They do several styles and finishes but the warmest and dryest by far has been a moleskin type which comes past your hips, about £35 now.
 
I like Regatta too. They do one which has a detachable fleece in it....nice colours and good for winter then without the fleece for spring. But for this year I found a perfect yard coat was really pleased with it....£35 Horseware black puffy thing. Not the most glamourous but really warm, totally waterproof, feels light to wear and roomy enough to move freely to do the yard work. I've washed it a few times now and it has survived so hopefully should last a few winters to come....
