Just out of interest, can you tell me which bit you use on your WB and why?

Obviously I know many of you may select a different bit for different activities and yes their all different but main reason I'm asking is due the fact that there known for having large fleshy tongues and I would be interested to see if there is one particular bit/make thats comes up trumps with this this breed.

Thank you

KK ultra snaffle and Universal. He also goes well in a waterford NS Jumper bit. He hates Myler bits. OK in a Verdibrand. Same as P, she also loved standard french links, but Splodge loved Myler bits. Em was in a pelham. Stan went best in a KK B ring.

Not very helpful am I

well like I said there all differnt lol but I'm glad you named them all because there is one in there that I have been recomended, the Verbindend Connection Bit, I was told its very good bit for WB's, providing everything is is in check (breaks/steering etc) and you only require a basic snaffle type of bit....so you were helpful after all!

neue schule verbindend - dressage - horse has quite a small mouth , is fussy in the contact & goes best in a thin mouthpiece

Both mine are in Level Two Comfort snaffles (Mylers) I have a polish Warmblood and a Westphalian the both respond very well to these

hanging check snaffle - horse is once again fussy, atho she was in a waterford when i got her because she tryed to run off with the bit & leant big time, but schooling has seemed to help alot!!

Where do I start...

Came with a straight bar Happy Mouth - felt lumpy and couldn't feel her mouth. She was a bit fussy with it.

Tried a Myler Pelham - she told me to faff off (didn't get chance to introduce the action of the bottom rein!)

Tried a Myler broad barrel fixed ring - still fussed a lot.

The AHT tried her in an expensive version of a Happy Mouth single jointed snaffle with loose rings (forgotten the name of it!), less fussy.

Tried a Happy Mouth three ring gag with the nugget joint, only used the big ring. Slightly less fussy, but still not happy on downward transitions, still get head throwing into the mix until we have worked hard. Surprisingly she seems to prefer a heavier contact, certainly heavier than I am used to.

Am wondering what to try next... She has a small-ish mouth for such a big DW head, tongue doesn't seem excessively fleshy.

Will be interested to see what responses you get

Mine goes in a Myler level 2 ported comfort snaffle (changed from a eggbutt snaffle with a lozenge link as it looked way too big in his little fat tongued mouth). As he liked the Myler snaffle, he also has a Myler Pelham so that we can use two reins for judges in showing classes - he seems to like that too!

Olympic is in a french link of no particular brand but it has got a thin mouthpiece which I find he goes well in and he has a mullen mouth pelham for jumping with a thin'ish mouthpiece which he also likes. Haen't tried him in a bit with a large mouthpiece so couldn't comment on how he goes in one.

my (old fashioned) dutch warmblood has a Hilary Vernon hanging cheek lozenge snaffle. he does have a fleshy tongue.

he was in a nathe bit for schooling before the snaffle.

Fly is a DWB and generally is happier all round in a german hackamore. I do ride him in a bit though (xc, fun rides etc) and use a loose ring happy mouth snaffle with a lozenge.

Both of them have a Sprenger KK Ultra, loose ring, french link snaffle. My 4-year-old has got the classic version, while my older horse has the Dynamic.

I was tempted to try the Lisa Wilcox one (supposed to encourage them to chew more) but didn't buy it in the end - not sure it would make much of a difference.

Neue Schule 'Verbindend' or 'team up' depending on what stage their schooling is at - a snaffle with a central lozenge so it fits in the mouth neatly as they tend to have big tongues and narrow mouths. I'd recommend going on the neue schule website then ringing Heather there for advice.

Mine came with a Happy Mouth but seemed to think it should be used as a teething ring! Transitioned her on to a stainless steel, loose ring french snaffle but now settled in a Myler french link. The mouth piece is more shaped than a normal french link, smaller lozenge and there are copper stipes on the mouth piece. So far, this seems to be working.
Oh and she is a fine Dutch KWPN, dose not have a fleshy tounge and has a small mouth (5" bit ).

Tried an egg butt snaffle with copper , no joy!!

Tried a french link loose ring - no joy!!

Tried a NS french link with peanut - no joy

Have kindly been lent a Myler D ring snaffle....absolutely loves it, so far!!!

She's a Belgium Warmblood btw, and doesn't have an excessively fleshy tongue!!

I use a happy mouth hangi9ng cheek snaffle with a roller in the middle, he seems to be happiest in this bit, have tried him in a few others but he tends to put his tongue over most!

Thank you everyone for your replies, all very helpful

Sometimes he can be a bit faffy in his mouth, head tossing a bit but not all the time just has the odd few minutes then he stops, usual checks done (teeth, back etc) also tried switching from the flash to normal cavason just in case it was because he didnt need his mouth strapping together etc (not my horse, came with that tack, bit was a normal but chunky type snaffle) now he's in finer french link full cheek with a cavason, certainly a lot better control and fined tuned the steering so thats good and going better into a contact, so I'm just exploring each option one by one, to make sure he's comfortable etc also tried a nose net just in case it could possibly be a pollen issue.

Having said all that, I took him out this evening for a hack and for the first time he was sweet as nut with his head and very good, no head tossing, perhaps he's now liking the French Link has we've only been using it for a week or so.

But I was interested to see what everyone else uses and for what reasons.
