Moved house last year to somewhere very cold and exposed and has really affected my motivation this winter!! Being tight with money I haven’t bought anything new for years, but now the sales are on and I want to invest in some really good gear. Am looking at the Weatherbeeta Kyla II, and then some trousers, and some warmer breeches, socks, gloves, thermals, maybe heated gilet…perhaps even some warmer boots to ride in.

Hit me with your recs!

I really like my Equ/Reincoat (they re-branded to Reincoat).

I find my indulated Ariat Grasmere's warm to ride and have been really impressed by my Rydale insulated wellingtons.

For base layers, I really like Mountain Warehouse base layers. Fairly cheap but very warm.

I got an Ororo heated coat for my birthday this year and it was a game changer (before one of the work horses broke it - argh!).

Next winter I will definitely be buying heated socks and gloves too.

I didnt find the Weatherbeeta that waterproof but have seen that they have increased the waterproof rating so they might be better.
I second layers. I live in these under a coat.
i've got a waterproof Ariat (picked up half price, as good as it is i couldnt justify the full price!) I also have a puffer type jacket that is fab in the cold.
Good over trousers or softshell type breeches. i also use primark teddy fleece leggings under breeches or tights. But to be honest, my legs are always cold unless covered by my coat, over skirts look like a good idea.
Never found the holy grail of boots to ride in. Ariat conitstens are good but i've found my feet need to be warm before i put boots on so i tend to wear them to warm the up which is not always ideal if you are dealing with mud. I'm going to invest in some fleece innersoles to see if that helps next year.

Not horse gear, would be my answer. Go on Vinted and buy decent quality second hand mountain gear - Mountain Eqipment, Rab, that kind of thing. It's a fraction of the price and usually much much better than anything horse branded. And I absolutely agree with @vam that cheap as chips Primark cosy leggings are brilliant underlayers for the money!

The exception would be a riding skirt - I have a fleece lined one from DoPo Coats and it is brilliant.

I got a weatherbeeta long coat a couple of years ago, it's lovely, comfy and warm but not waterproof, somehow all the water ends up around the arms/ cuffs

For warmth primark fleece leggings. I also got a long sleeve top from B&M made of the same thick fleecy material. I wear both as a base layer and they keep me so warm.

I have one of these https://twobarefeet.co.uk/changing-robes/adult-weatherproof-changing-robes.html half the price of equestrian ones. They do have riding ones too but I've just got the normal one which you can still ride in anyway, you just bring the bottom zip up so the lower half is open instead. It has been a game changer, so incredibly warm and it's roomy so you can add more layers if you need to. I get really cold legs so it's actually made this winter bearable!

These are fab recommendations, thank you so much.
Looking at Stierna which seems to be all the rage atm and wondering if I can get any on sale…are they worth the money?

Uniqlo thermals in different weights. Eqcouture winter leggings are warm & stretchy enough to get thermals underneath. Regatta for a variety of padded coats on the cheap!

They’re unflattering and i swore i would never wear one but the Equidry i got 2 years ago has been great for riding, I didn’t realise what a difference covering my legs would make. Before the equidry i had a cheap version from primark which is totally waterproof and very warm, i just went for the Equidry for riding as its hi-viz, I keep that for riding and the primark for everything else

Layers all the layers. Starting with a thermals from mountain warehouse et al. Thick fleece tights are good, I prefer the footless version otherwise my feet sweat.
Socks I like thick warm hiking ankle socks with knee length wool socks.

Ive a 2nd hand mens thick lambs wool 1/4 jumper that is great too.

I can't stand wool next to my skin but good wool items are really warm, and breathable.

Thermal leggings from M&S under your breeches/jods /tights then waterproof trousers on top. I have the Le Meiux ones and they are great for riding in.
Thermal long sleeved vest under a long sleeved top then hoodie then coat. Good winter gloves and hats.

I haven’t been cold at all this winter at my yard on top of the Pennines.

.

Equidry or my hkm heated coat have all done their jobs this winter. Also have worn equine splendour winter leggings or decathlon kipwarm breeches.

These are fab recommendations, thank you so much.

I have the long stierna winter coat and love it. Great for riding in, keeps legs warm which seems to help with overall warmth. Stays put even in windy conditions. Waterproof, and keeps me and saddle completely dry. I also think it’s really flattering as a nice shape.

Stierna sometimes come up for sale out of season and mine has held its waterproofness, so have my Equidry long coats. Stierna is more flattering as a better shape and the hi viz works well. Equidry is fab as you can wear over anything - they had some good reductions on the long parkas recently.

Why have I never thought to try this! 🤯

Also in cold upland area and for riding out in bitter weather find stretch ski clothing (worth trawling charity shops) best with buff or balaclava under hat. I wear heated gillet but remove battery when actually riding as it sits against hip and feels a bit risky in case of unscheduled dismount! Mountain horse synthetic boots toasty warm and 2 pairs of thin gloves better than one thick pair. Roll on summer…

Rab Powerstretch leggings, under Wranger stretch jeans or Ariat jeans with suede full length chaps. Toasty!
M and S warmest thermals (with merino wool), fleece, gillet and Equisafety jacket.

I am such a cold person and spend all winter in my equidry coat, skellerup quatro sport wellies, primark fleece lined leggings (under whatever trousers or breeches I am wearing) and sealskinz gloves. Those are my essentials for winter
