Has anyone seen the rumors on face book about a vet in the USA.
Vet in question was seen on cctv using a cattle prod on a horse over 1000 times including to the face and eyes. Horse was in a colapsed state and in a sling at the time.
Apparently this is not the first time this has happened?

DO NOT SEARCH FOR THE VIDEOS OF THIS - IT IS INCREDIBLY DISTRESSING.

I'm not seeing any video on the links provided and I would say it is probably routine practice to shock a horse that looks like it's drifting away after a general anaesthetic. We do it to humans, only it's not easy to defbrillate a horse. Is the 1000 times just hearsay, because I can't see any way anyone could do that, it would take an awful long time?

1000 times in 30 minutes.
It was not routine.
Shocked the horses eyes.

No link to video - very distressing to watch

I don't know if it's routine to shock a horse's eyes in this situation. If the horse is not coming to after a GA then I can see why someone might try to get it back to life by shocking a very sensitive spot. It's not torture if the horse is comatose.

The charges on the other video were dismissed, it's not relevant. There's a very high suicide rate amongst vets because of witch hunts on social media by distressed owners. I want more information before I can condemn this one.

I don’t think anyone in vet field has come out and said using a cattle prod repeatedly on a horse that’s not responding after GA is standard practice!
Never mind using it on horse’s most sensitive areas.

I've not seen anyone come out and say it isn't, either. It's not exactly something vets would shout about. They have to do something if a horse isn't coming round, they can't just stand there and let it die because it doesn't want to start breathing.

I can pm you a link to the video - then come back to me and tell me if you tthink it is abusive?

ETA: this was 20hours after GA as far as I can remember.

I'd actually be interested in seeing the video to make my own mind up please?

My first thought was 'f*ck, that's bloody horrific' but I o not feel adequately informed to make my own opinion just from reading others' thoughts online tbh.

No thank you I don't want to watch it but I wouldn't want to watch a lot of very nasty stuff we do to animals to keep them alive so please don't read anything into that. Can you point me to any criticism by vets who have watched it?

I have seen one snippet and the horse was still in the recovery room.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds vile.

I have only just realised that article was from October 2021, well over a year ago. What happened at the trial?

Is this a social media witch hunt of someone who was found not guilty?

Trial isn’t til June of this year. Texas board of veterinary medical examiners is asking for her licence to be revoked so I assume they found it beyond what would be acceptable to keep a horse alive.

Oddly, I was watching Longmire (Netflix or Prime) last night where a bronc rider was accused of using a cattle prod on the horse to make it buck higher. I’m sure a video of an American rider was accused of doing something with a cattle prod/taser device was posted on here a couple of years ago.

I think it's pretty clear from the video and the equipment shown that whether horse owners like it or not, the use of the cattle prod to try to elicit a response from a horse reluctant to come round from a GA is routine, at least in the US. What she did was use it far too much for far too long. I do think she was genuinely trying to keep the horse alive and not acting out of sadism, but very misguided in what she did. Humans frequently have their ribs broken in a desperate effort to keep them alive and we have electric shock units on street corners. Some aspects of medicine really aren't pleasant.

My OH says if you don’t break ribs, you aren’t doing it right. You have to be very forceful doing cpr, apparently. He’s fed up of seeing people on beds being given cpr, you need a hard surface.

I have seen the video (I couldn't watch it all but it's on youtube if anyone would like to make up their own mind), the horse was very much reacting to what she was doing from the first second of it, it was actively trying to get away from her and moving it's head away, although couldn't stand.

There is absolutely no excuse, and she is sick in the head. Who cattle prods a horse in the eyes multiple times whilst it's throwing its head around trying to get away and then trys to use the defense that that is how they bring round animals. Hideous.

I agree with this. I of course think she needs to be struck off but I also do not agree with the social media hate campaign.

I dont think she did this because shes a sicko. I think she acted badly under pressure, made a poor decision out of desperation to try and save this animals life.

It is clear she does not have an entirely sound thought process and should not ever be in that position again, but I do not think shes an inherently bad person.
