Warning - Dog strangled by collar

My dog managed to get herself caught on a piece of wire in a hedge. She was stuck fast in the depths of a hawthorn hedge. I was lucky to find her.

I am now torn between letting her off the lead with no collar and hence ID tag, or the risk that she may get caught up again. She has already come back to me once minus her collar, on that occasion she pulled it over her head.

That's horrible, poor dogs. That has really hit home because we have exactly the same collar on our 11 week old lab puppy. Slightly different though because we don't have another dog and Bran (proper name is Bran Y Gors - Welsh for Raven) is not left in the garden on his own.

Big red i know ur feeling my lab goes off into all under growth and i worry he may get caught- i now walk him locally with no collar- he is microchipped. But if we go off walking i put it on as he doesn't no where we are.

Something very similar happened to a friends friend a couple of years ago - sadly one dog died then despite their best efforts to get the collar off.

I always keep F's collar very loose so that it will just pull off but it does concern me.

This massively freaks me out. I have bought Pippin a soft rolled leather one for her tag not to be lead from. My hope is (and I've seen her do it) that if it gets caught she can wriggle out of it or it will snap under pressure, along the lines of the leather head-collar theory. She is also micro-chipped but I HATE them, hers is sitting atm next to her spine and it always has a lot of swelling around it. Blurgh! Know it does a job but just Blurgh! :o

What an awful story, I dont understand why nobody pinned them down and cut them free though?! It needed bolt croppers? I would hazard this wasnt a standard collar but a choke chain, which I would NEVER leave on a dog. I leave collars on all mine except when woring but they arent led from them out walking and therefore they are really really loose so will just flop off over their heads if caught on anything.

Dogs all micro chipped but won't put collars on terriers as they go down rabbit holes and some collies don't have collars just carry slip leads with me, but they are all farm dogs and don't venture off the property much, law says meant to have tag but they would loose them easily anyway.

Odd...they where probably outside/kennel dogs:confused: Im not seeing why they collars could not be cut of by the owner unless as suggested they where choke chains which should not really be left on.
My dogs wear collars at all times and will keep wearing them.:)

the fact they needed bolt cutters suggests the collar that choked the dog was not the one pictured! Misleading article? Such a shame :(

Yes does seem like it was a choke chain rather than the flat collar pictured, which you can just squeeze and release. Still bloody horrible though.

I have my dog's collar loose enough that it can slide over his head easily as he likes chasing squirrels through dense woodland. His best doggy friend is always taking his collar off when they play and I have lost a few but I'd rather that than a strangled dog.

I agree it was more than likely a choke chain, hence the bolt cutters needed. However, I have heard of it happening with ordinary flat collars, if one dog has its jaw trapped in anothers collar it immediately becomes incredibly tight, difficult to use something sharp to cut when it is against the other dogs throat.:(
Re dogs playing at midnight, agree its unusual, but the 2 pups think its a great idea to disappear across the garden in the pitch dark when I let them out last thing, and then have a really noisy play fight!:p

poor dog. seems like there must be more to the story though.

a dog i know nearly died after jumping out of the ground floor window, and getting her collar caught on the handle.

betty only has her collar on when we are out walking. i need to get another leather collar- the D ring came off her old one- as i feel they are safer than the synthetic ones. if she was to get caught the leather would break before a synthetic one.

she is walked on a metal pinch collar, but i take it off if she is loose anywhere.

on a similar note- i never leave head collars on when in a stable... my friend's youngster got caught on the top bolt of the door and panicked. her owner was stuck in the stable with her. the horse went down so we couldn't undo the headcollar- had to cut it off. luckily nobody was hurt, but my god it was SCARY

My dogs dont wear collars. Both microchipped. Only time they will ever wear a collar is if they happen to be going on a road walk which is very rare. Just take a lead with me to slip on them should I need it.

Worst thing I've seen though is a cacker scum near me who permanently left his 'staffie' in a body harness, poor animal had to sleep in it and everything. Happy to say he no longer has the animal, hopefully gone somewhere nicer....who knows with those types of dogs though :-(

This almost happened to one of our jack russells. We went out shopping and when we came back found them tangled together with one's lower jaw caught in the collar of the other one and twisted around. The other bitch was unconscious. Had we not arrived back when we did, she would have died. Since then, neither has worn a collar. They are both microchipped and have a body harness when on the lead, but I would never put a collar on a terrier again.

Yes, this does sound like it was a choke chain and not a normal collar. I once had my dog and a friend's dog get caught on each other's collar whilst on a walk and we had to unbuckle one of the collars. I use snap collars on my two goldies now and they only wear them under supervision.
