I've been very fortunate in my 45-odd years with horses to have never had more than a small 'nip'.

But today, despite all my years of understanding 'horse', I was bitten out of the blue and have spent the day in A&E and surgery ... I'm not posting this for sympathy (or in self-pity!), but just as a reminder of what they can do ... especially to be passed on to all those who have problems with their horses being fed tit-bits over a gate by passers-by: put this on your gate and you may find 'problem solved'!

Thanks, Shutterbug! Sure it will be ouchy when the drugs wear off ;0)

And Notimetoride, thank you too, but more puzzled than sorry for myself, to be honest ...

I'm fine but thanks, OldNag :)

Ouch, what happened Mrs B??

Lots of vibes for a speedy recovery. Look after that wound as it's in a vulnerable position x

Oow, ouch, my toes are curling... Guessing this was a lunge for an imagined titbit moment?

No - I leant on his stable door to say 'Hi! You ok?' (no titbits anticipated or involved as I don't give them except immediately after work) and he - he can be a grump-bunny, but usually gives warnings - got me with a mouth stuffed full of hay.

Wow......I can see it now, that is a nasty bite. I hope it doesn't hurt to badly tomorrow!!

I am fine now thank you, that is the problem with rescue animals you just never know, for some reason this dog just disliked me and took a nice lump out of my calf. Still found a home for him, never showed any aggression towards anyone else, really strange. I get on with most dogs so it was a shock. Not as bad as your bite as it didn't need dressing, the tetanus hurt more! Although it was quite painful for a few weeks.

Thanks, Suki. It's always unsettling sometimes how they can react ... I get on with most animals and certainly most horses ... but there's always more to learn.

Ouch indeed. Jacob (profile pic) is "nippy", seeing your pic, we may have to up the disciplines levels. I already nearly lost a finger! Good luck with the recovery.

Ooo, that looks very painful. It's amazing how many injuries we have from horses, when we aren't even sitting on them! Hope it heals very soon.

Really just posted this for a reality-check, not sympathy (honestly, it's not hurting at the moment!) but thank you for all your responses and I hope it makes even one person remember how reactive and powerful these animals are.

That's a big chunk missing
Hope it recovers quickly. And, isn't too sore while doing so.
I was once bitten on my shoulder, through several layers of clothes.nasty bruise, but The horse actually picked me up off the ground- I'm 5'9" tall and over 12 stone- it's easy to forget how powerful horses jaws are....

Yikes!!! Lots of virtual hugs for you! That looks like it hurt!

The only time I have been really bitten was by a sweet little colt who thought I had something.
He luckily got my finger, which had a ring on! The ring is good quality and really tough, but he bent it way out of shape! Thankfully managed to fix it and thankfully it wasn't my finger :O

That's a good hole. I have a thing about my fingers, if I hurt them I almost pass out. I degloved the end of my finger when it got caught between the horse and the gate. I was stood in the mud with a very dirty bit of tissue wrapped around it trying to close the gate and not pass out.
We do forget how strong their teeth are.
