I've never heard the the thing about the use of "pit" - I thought that it was used in the breeds name e.g. American Pit Bull Terrier and that pit bull type was a recognised collective term...

I would also be reluctant to use Bull Terrier type as BTs have a very good reputation and are even said to be good with children but I know what you mean...
 
It's not just the horses who suffer.

I was riding Angel through the chart. An old guy stood by his spaniel to let us past (we exchanged good mornings/thanks etc) He let her go and she belted up behind Angel's back legs. Angel bucked and caught the spaniel clean under the chin and knocked it out cold. I was so scared as I thought we'd killed the dog !! Dog eventually came around thank goodness !! The spaniel was not being aggresive but simply wanted to play with the 'big dog'.

I don't understand why people don't put their dogs on leads. I do !

I doubt they will.
In two days time, it will a year since I lost Eric, he was attacked by a staffy dog and the infection ravaged his body. An appeal to the papers and radio, but no one came forward.

Sadly, the kind of people who allow dogs to behave in this way are probably not the kind you want to be involved with, they wont be sweet little old men or ladies with a pet dog, they will hard tough idiots that would punch your lights out if you dared to question them.
 
A guy on our yard ended up with a broken arm due to dog - and owner was with it. And dog was a labrador.

He was riding young horse on a bridlepath - dog (loose) ran out and nipped horse - horse went loopy. John lost balance and as he fell - dog made another lunge at horse. Horse kicked out - missed dog and kicked rider. During all of this the owner didn't even attempt to call dog up.
 
i girl on my yard was attacked by a pitt-bull cross type of dog it chased the horse for ages and then she came of and the dog chased the horse down the road the girl was taken to hospital and had to stay in over night and some how a police officer found the horse and brought it back to the yard both are ok now but the owner of the dog was arrested but later released and he got the dog back! how ridiculous
 
I was riding on the road passing a farm when a couple of sheep dog type dogs ran out and one of them attacked my horse biting it on it's legs and eventually got my horse down on the road and me on the deck. It continued attacking my horse. Once I got up and sorted the dog out both dogs ran off in to the farm yard. I then had to get my horse up and calm her down and then leading my horse followed the dogs in to the farm yard where I found the owner who then became very abusive and aggresive towards me.

I walked my horse home and she required several weeks off work as a direct result of the injuries she received.

I contacted both the police and the dog warden both of whom visited the owner and made it quite clear to him that if they had any further complaints about his dogs running on to the road then they would be put down.

One other point - dogs kept adjacent to a public highway, bridleway etc. that are a nuisance to passers can be proscuted by the local authority using the environment protection act and the owners forced to restrain them. This could for instance mean that even if they remain on the owners premises but cause a nuisance by jumping at the boundary fence or growling the owner can be forced to restrain the dogs.

Does this apply to pigs? I can't go along the bridleway at the end of the farm lane as there is a litter of piglets that charge the fence and scare the living daylights out of the horse, who either bolts for the road or jumps onto the verge - which is overgrown and has old barbed wire fencing collapsed under the long grass so either its play with traffic or slash her legs to ribbons on hidden fencing...

There's a couple of riders on the Muleskinner Forum who if bothered by dogs on the trail just take out their gun and shoot them

Our local bridlepath was shut for three months because of the gypsy dog packs in the end the counsil just opened it and said "If you get any trouble call the police" (Oh Yeah like having rolled down a steep bank in amongst a load of brambles in the middle of nowhere the police about thirty miles away are going to be any help!)
I was leading Malaga passed the camp and out came the pack leader a chow cross who went straigyt for him.I just said "I wouldn't do that if I was you!"--He looked up at Malaga who was standing patiently with hind leg resting..waiting
