I've never heard the the thing about the use of "pit" - I thought that it was used in the breeds name e.g. American Pit Bull Terrier and that pit bull type was a recognised collective term...
I would also be reluctant to use Bull Terrier type as BTs have a very good reputation and are even said to be good with children but I know what you mean...
