GK52 VVF registration of vehicle steeling dogs, 60 taken so far from Wansbeck area, reported white pickup/van. Dogs being used for bait in dog fights, muzzles are taped shut. Please keep an eye on your dogs, don’t leave them in garden/yard unsupervised. RSPCA and police have been notified. (via Sunderland, Tyne & Wear).

If anyone is in need of rehoming a dog PLEASE do not put it free to good home or cheap off the internet, find a reputable rescue be it breed specific or general because they are ending up with the same fate!

I've seen it on fb posted by quite a few people, but not seen any offical link to police or similar. If you do a search on the number plate it is registered to a white transit van so that certainly seems genuine.

I will be only too happy to repost wherever I can, if I can just get some reassurance that I am not inadvertently posting some innocent person's number plate, that will lead to them being abused and wrongly accused throughout the internet.

Please bear in mind everyone that this problem is countrywide these days. As has been said, dogs are being stolen when tied up outside shops, taken out of gardens, bogus homes offered to dogs being given away for free on the internet etc These people just want bait dogs and don't care about what type/age the dog is.

And what you have said is exactly WHY I will be happy to spread this warning, if it can be substantiated in some way other than just posting a number plate with no link to any official police or RSPCA report.;)

ALL of the above. No dog is too old, 'mongrely', 'will only go with it's owner', "nobody would want my dog" - there are people out there who will take any dog, whether it puts up a fight or not, to train fighting dogs, sell on or whatever.

I understand kittens and rabbits are also used as bait.

Agree with this and sadly, it doesn't only apply to dogs! Cockerels are also taken for fighting birds to learn on and are so often advertised as free to good home.

its everywhere. Example about 6 months ago of a woman who gave her golden retriever away and this was in Guildford, down in leafy Surrey (reported in the local press). She knows it was used as a bait dog as had the police round some 3 weeks later having found the dog, savaged to death, with its muzzle taped shut. They traced her via the microchip.

Sounds like a hoax to me, I don't doubt that it goes on but only in a small way. If 60 dogs were stolen from one area I can't help but think it would be newsworthy. Alot of it is just scaremongery, if anyone really wants a bait dog then they are easy enough to find without stealing pets.

This. Especially outside of shops in town centres.

wouldn't it be lovely if it was... not all dogs that are stolen for bait many for resale sites like dogslost get a small % of the problem. My personal per hate are the people who advertise their bitches in whelp or ready for breeding. I'm a little sick to the back teeth of people who are only prepared to have a dog as a puppy, do no work to train it or help create behavioural problems then dump or sell on expecting the near same price as a puppy :mad: then see it as a money tree :mad:
