For those of you who are currently horse hunting, please do a little homework before you go, I'd just like to give a little warning as a reminder to you all.

Check when ringing that the photos on the advert are very recent ones (which you'd presume I know) AND were taken at vendors property if it's obvious the horse is not out competing or at a training show etc), also double check website address, names and mobile numbers, that the dealers yard/company name (for example:- Somethingorother Sport Horses) indeed does actually belong to the vendor and not someone else, don’t go to view a horse on your own no matter how pleasent and professional they seem on the phone, I know most people don’t but even if your not riding it on that particular viewing, still go with a few people and make sure the property has a postcode.

Finally because this has really annoyed me and I apologise if this comes across a touch harsh, if a well bred horse has no future of a ridden career, please do the horse a favour and have it shot, put to sleep, claim of your insurance, what ever it takes, don't just sell it on or give it away because you don't want to loose out the money or it makes you feel a little less guilty knowing it could potentially 'make a nice brood mare' or it's going to a friend, have some back bone, take responsibilty, have some pride, if you are a breeding these horses that don't make the grade they are bred for.

Otherwise they end up in the sorry states I've just had the misfortune of seeing and are just being passed around the country from pillar to post.

Good advice.

Plus I don't think you are being harsh, I think you are being realistic and it is a responsibility that ought to be taken seriously.

Totally agree!

I have a friend (well not any more as we have fallen out over this), who is trying to sell an aged mare with a un-diagnosed lamness.

If the owner is not prepared to investigate the cause of lamness, or look after the horse into old age, why should they expect any one else too?

It is being marketed as a light hack/companion - but it can't be left on it's own in the field as it frets, and can't be stabled either because it box walks, with none of this mentioned in the ad......

All this because she can't afford to keep it but is not prepared to PTS - it makes my blood boil!

Totally agree. I'd even add any horse, not just a well bred one. With the passporting shambles and ease with which dealers falsify identities, it happens across the board. :(
