Warning Signs

Just wondering really


Do you display dog warning signs such as 'Beward German Shepherd lives here' etc?


I have a Staffordshire bull terrier but we don't have any signs on the gate/in the house to say that we have one, in a way I think that if someone has the guts to break in to our house they should be greeted by a dog protecting their territory

My boyfriends mom has a 'Beware I live here' sign with a photo of a staffie on it, but nothing displaying that she has a bull mastiff or a pug there to - she did want a bull mastiff sign as her bullie can be very very protective over the house (more bark than anything)
 
We didn't have a sign as such, we had the real thing, a turkey. He lived in the garden and he was vile. Fine with my OH and OKish with me, but strangers .......! :eek:

Is there not a school of thought that says you are admitting to having an unpredictable dog if you put these signs up so are liable if anything happens?

Yes there is. I suppose that it works on the old (and probably pointless) adage, that "Every dog is allowed one bite", so by placing a warning sign you've accepted that you keep a dog which is likely to bite someone, or has done so previously. What's so wrong about this, is that if you have burglars, and they are bitten, then you, as the dog owner, are liable. Work that one out, it makes no sense to me, furthermore, if we had a break-in, and the miscreant got himself nailed, then that'd be tough luck.

The other side to the problem is that if you keep such a dog, and an innocent person, the worst scenario being a child, entered your garden or general curtilage, and was injured, as has happened, then those people are entitled to the protection of the Law.

I haven't a clue as to the answer! :o

I have a 'beware of the tortoise' one. Tortoise is actually male whippet who would kill anyone with love and kisses if they entered my house without me holding him back :D:D

When I adopted Diesel and Darcy from Doberman Welfare I was advised to put a sign on my garden gate which said Caution dogs running free, please shut the gate, which I did. It states the obvious but dosnt imply my dogs are in anyway aggressive or to be feared and anyway my dogs are never left in the garden unsupervised.
 
I have the "Caution dogs Running Free" sign. It is important to have some sort of notification that a dog is there, in case of people have valid reason to enter your property.
Some years ago, we had ordered two cases of wine. GSD was in garden - we had a back entrance to the garden. Delivery man carried in first case ok, thencame in with second. Dog barked at him, he aimed kick then legged it to the gate and tried to leap over with dog hanging on to leg. He tried to claim for the injury, but it fell apart because he said there was no sign - there was it was A4 size, and because of "harassment" (ie. he came round to the house asking when his money would arrive. We reported this to our insurers).
