Ok so some by know on the 2/09/09 Cas put a 2.5" deep cut in his hock, caused by barb wire. (Yes i know should never be mixed with horse, hangs head in shame. Cas found the only strip left on the land

) Cut was too the bone, he also severed a tendon. So here are the pics, thought some may find them interesting/ helpful. Havent got the pic on my pc of when we first found him.
After spending a week in Leahurst, this is from the first bandage change; 11/09/09 Throughout evry bandage change he is having to be sedated, as will not tolerate us going near his leg. Poor boy.

Next bandage change; 16/09/09 Not the white is the severed tendon.

Yet another bandage change; 18/09/09 swelling is going down, and wound is shrinking up.

And last one for now, yesterdays change; 22/09/09 vet trimmed some of the proud flesh at the bottom of the wound, after pic was taken tho.

Good news is the vet says hes healing very quick and all the tissue is healthy.
Sorry if the pics are abit horific!

Hope some find it interesting, should be good to see all the stages.
 
My friends horse did exactly the same thing in the same place, not with barbed wire though, with the rope style electric fencing tape, thankfully the electric wasn't on, but the horse the sort to panic, hence dragging then snapping the posts and nearly tearing his leg off!

He did it round about this time last year, you can still see it, obviously proud flesh was a problem too but he made a full recovery (still had a bit of scaring though) but unfortunately he went and did it again, in the same place a few weeks ago (at a different yard, with the plain wire) not sure how he managed it as the place is well fenced, such a shame and more vet bills and nursing for the owner.

Thanks guys, it was worse becaue i had travelled 2.5 hours away with my othe horse that day to attend the search for a star training day, then got the phone call all us horse owners dread.

. My mare had a similar injury but lower down on her cannon bone, she severed her extensor tendon. Like your horse, mine had to be sedated every time we changed the bandage, it was a nightmare so I sympathise with you. She is fine now though (4 years on), she has a rather unsightly lump but other than that no problems whatsoever

Well done with getting it healing so quickly, you are obviously doing something right! Don't blame yourself for the barbed wire, horses can stand in fields surrounded by barb wire and never hurt themselves then some can hurt themselves on plain wire just by wrapping it around limbs!

The only safe options for horse are wood (far too expensive for most people) or electric tape (useless for pushy rugged horses!) we have to compromise and hope that our horse's don't do anything stupid, stuff happens it's no one's fault!

Glad others have known similar injuries, that have turned out ok. It is horrid, and having to sedate him is no fun either, i have to cover his eyes to get the needle in him. Feel so useless. Good thing is he doesnt mind being on box rest at all, so long as hes got a net he's happy as larry!
 
I must say I have a morbid sort of curiosity re injuries and stuff as the healing power of the body always amazes me. Will his tendon be ok? if it was severed did they not stitch it back together or will he have a permanent lameness? Anyway pleased for you and your horse that he seems to be on the mend.
 
ah I wondered bout the tendon too.

At least it is going in the right direction though and interesting pics- I like looking at stuff like that. I have only seen one b wire injury before and that was on a horse that had severed both tendons on front legs, the vets operated to repair but they got infected.

We are lucky to have our own land so have post and rail which I will forever appreciate. we do use electric too but would never use the rope as have heard too many incidents though not sure the tape is any better.
 
my mare has a nasty scar on her back leg from barb wire she got caught in as a foal. Done before i got her,if i ever came into the field and saw that i would freak,i'm a bit of a hypacon anyway with my horses,ever since my first mare did her hip in i'm paranoid totally now,whereas before that i was sooo laid back about injuries. Glad your boy is doing well,brave soul.
 
Gosh that looks like its healing well from what it was! Poor you and the boy. Once the bandages are off i can highly recommend tube of squeezable honey (doesn't need to be manuca???) for the wound. I thought it was a daft idea but after kissing spine surgery it was a funny area to get at bandage wise etc so i tried it and no one can see a mark on him even vets question where it was - it was closed well at hospital obviously but we had a nightmare getting the 40 staples out - went through 3 local vets and tonnes of sedation to let us at him long enought to snip them out so it was getting a bit hacked after all that. Honey draws moisture from the rest of the body to keep the wound moist and help with scaring and proud flesh - as far as i can remember from a vet talk. Good luck anyway.
 
Jeez that's some mess he made of himself! Horses do the most stupid things at times! Just out of interest have you used a laser on it? We had a horse at the yard do a right nasty one and the laser really helped to heal it up quicker and far more cleanly than it would have normally. Clearly your management of this injury looks to be absolutely spot on, but was just a thought...
 
Have used mankuna honey on my other horse, so im sure once wound gets further on we will use honey impregnanted dressing, followed by mankuna on its own.

I havent heard of using a laser until someone kindly pm'd me today, will ask vet. I looked at hydrotherapy, so going to ask about that too.
